earbuds
I have looked at past posts but they are from 2 to 3 yrs ago and it seems that there are more options available for electronic earbuds, I bought a pair of axels last week and never even got the range with them, ( a real pain to get them adjusted properly) so I sent them back for a refund, I own a pair of walkers game ear muffs that I really like but would like to switch to some buds, looking for recommendations from some real time users..

Strictly my opinion
I believe muffs offer more/better hearing protection versus buds. Fit matters of course.

I’ve tried a few audio earbuds in the past but none really met my expectations. Oh sure I could press and hold them in my ear canals with my fingers and get amazing sound but that kind of defeats the whole purpose of the things. I just never found the “Goldilocks” ear hole adapters to make those things sound acceptable to me.
Having said that, I now have a bias against hearing protection ear buds because of those prior experiences. The bottom line is I really don’t want to discover that my ear buds don’t adequately block the noise of gunfire while at the range. Throw in the fact that I have tinnitus in my right ear and significant hearing loss in my left ear (too many Ted Nugent concerts back in the ‘70s I suppose) I am very protective of what hearing I have left. As a consequence when I visit the range I stuff foam ear plugs in the ears and wear a set of passive or electronic muffs as well. I can’t double up like that with protective buds nor do I believe that they are as effective reducing noise as traditional ear muffs alone. You be you but let me tell you…once the ringing starts and/or the hearing gets muted, it ain’t ever coming back…ever! |

I am not a big fan of plugs/earbuds for hearing protection
I have found over the years with earbuds and earplugs that they have one major flaw that I have been unable to overcome despite trying different brands and sizes - they slip out with movement, talking/gum chewing, and sweat. Often, they release very slowly, maybe a fraction of a mm per step, and then after a 400 yard stalk on a boar, I don't realize that one or both of the buds has unseated far enough to not have a good seal which is what I usually discover with the first shot, followed immediately by ringing Note: Before going suppressed, I wore plugs for years, but almost exclusively as a supplement to the muffs. The muffs were nice because they would catch the plugs when they feel out...which saved searching time on night stalks.

I'm with double naught. Plugs can work, shooting trap with a MC stock even the low profile muffs bang the stock. I use plugs for trap, and muffs otherwise.
