Working up loads and catching brass (AR)
Working up loads on a non .223 AR recently in the rain and cold, I decided that it would be nice to have a brass catcher for the rifle and bought a $7 one that worked but not the best mounting system, so another $10 for a QD mount off of eBay and a 3/8 strip of 1/8" steel and I had found a use for a section of the rail and a brass catcher that mounts and unmounts quickly and is always lined up with the ejection port.

The brass catchers that look like fishing nets, free standing separate from the gun, seem to do a good job.
One range near here uses window screens that bounce the brass back on the bench. |

That's cool, Jmorris. did something similar for my Marlin 9mm camp carbine, home made, but used the scope mount holes on top of the receiver for a flip up muslin bag over the ejection port. As they say, laziness is the mother of invention...

I use a pop up mesh laundry bag from Walmart (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-...-of-2/16206974). I have it rigged to the side of my spotting scope tripod for offhand shooting, but you can devise your own setup as needed. The commercial ones are just too expensive, and this folds into a really small package.

I use one of these on my varmint rifle. The brass drops to the ground just below it. I have too much time invested in brass prep to lose that stuff in the weeds.

I have an old projector screen. Set a tarp under it set the screen up and if you are just standing there it works fine.

jmorris, thanks for sharing that. you got my gears turning for sure.
I have been staying away from my preferred scope mount because I like my Caldwell Pic Rail Brass Catcher so much and going with the Velcro (never stays in place) option was not an option. |
