Several years ago, I took down my RCBS Jr press to pins and screws for a good cleaning. Since then, I have suffered in silence with a problem, and I've decided to poll the collective wisdom of our membership for possible causes and solutions.

The damned thing just won't stay up. The handle, that is.

That is to say, the handle falls to the "down" position, and the ram travels all the way up, whenever you release the handle. Before I "cleaned it up and made it all better", the ram would stay in the lowered position. Now it won't. What have I done?

Is it possible to get the gizmo connecting the ram and handle back on backwards? If it's like the Rock Chucker I used to use, the natural gravity of where the handle returns will keep the ram down and the handle up.

Get something reversed, and you might have the weight of the handle being on the wrong side of the fulcrum. Then gravity takes over.

Best I can suggest without some pics or line drawings. Does RCBS have any pics or drawings of the JR on their web site???

There is a small piece of metal(like a potato chip) that fits on the pin between the handle and frame. It acts as a wedge and provides fricton that holds the handle up. I actually had to replace mine once. If you call RCBS they will send you one for free.

Hutch,

Call RCBS Customer Service (800) 533-5000, and tell them you have worn out your Tension Spring, part# 09115.

They will send you out one at no charge.

Been there, done that!!

Good Luck...

Joe

when you talk to RCBS ask them do they still sell the "Case Kicker" i don't see them for sale anymore but back when i first started loading back in the 60's-the kicker was the best thing since sliced bread or maybe even gunpowder. With the kicker all you do is put a case in the shell holder when you complete the stroke and the ram comes down it pushes the case out of the shell holder down into a box..../Dick

I'm a-gonna try it.

I doubt my part wore out at the same time I reassembled the booger. I bet I've installed it wrong, per youse guys (y'all's) opinion. Thanks. If I speak to the RCBS folks, I'll be sure to ask if the case kicker is still available. I'm off to the bench tonight.

Thanks a bunch, amigos.

You can get new bow washers from RCBS. I don't like them because I feel the drag. Took them out of all my presses.
I made a new handle for my old JR that puts center of weight just to the rear of the toggle apex. Now it stays up. Photo
