460: cheaper ammo, less recoil, better trajectory for long range, more versatile (Casull and Colt).
500: more powerful, braggin' rights. |

I went with the .460 because you can chamber .454 Casull and .45 Colt. While the .500 is a more robust round, the ballistics are very similar. Consider these factory loads:
.460Mag 300gr @ 2,060 fps Buffalo Bore 360gr @ 1,900 fps BB 395gr @ 1,525 fps Cor-bon .500Mag 350gr @ 1,600 fps Cor-bon 400gr @ 1,625 fps Cor-bon 400gr @ 1,800 fps Double Tap The modest extra velocity isn't likely to make any practical difference. But with the two lighter rounds available for the .460 you have hugh flexibility and, at least in my case, it gets a lot more range time loaded with Casulls than with full-house mags. And the .454 Casull is a heck of a hunter on it's own right. Consider these factory loads: .454 Casull 250 gr @ 1,900 fps Double Tap 360 gr @ 1,623 fps BB 400 gr @ 1,741 fps DT But....the .500 wins hands down on bragging rights! And it can sling 500 gr bullets, which has a certain symmetry. Last edited by mes227; December 18, 2011 at 12:18 AM. |

Only the 460 is offered in a 5". The 500 comes in a 4" or 6.5". Hard to compare them on barrel length/perfermance.

I'm into handgun hunting..but the 460 caught my attention when the round first rolled out, and I still think it was great idea and a great cartridge...460 ,454 ,and 45 Colt..all great cartridges...
Now if someone would come out with a Levergun chambered in the 460 ![]() |

What are you wanting to use it for? Or do you just want something badass?
I'd love to have a 460, but I wouldnt trade my 500 for it. I can always load down for plinking. The 460 can throw a lighter bullet faster, but a 500 can throw a 700gr bullet. With the 700gr bullets, the a 1/2 pound of lead in the cylinder!!! |

Well then get the 500. I don't regret buying mine at all. It will do anything you want it to.

I have never shot the 460 but I have the 500. They should rename it the 500 WOW!!!! because is what every new shooter says after shooting it lol. Yes the bullets cost alot but I mainly use mine for hunting so it is not that big of a deal, plus I reload, droping the price dramatically. Some shooting ranges have them to rent, that would be the best way to see. I also think the 500 is better known by regular people so the bragging rights are automatic.

When I think "big bore revolver," I think of my Ruger Alaskan in .480. Sort of a modern bulldog. It reminds me of that staple line in pulp detective fiction, "The bad guy spun around. His hand was full of gun." The Alaskan will fill your hand for sure!

convincing the wife is the hardest part especially considering the gun cost as much as a cheep used car lol, my gun actually cost more than my car. I used my half of our income tax to purchase it. could always just buy it and tell her it was a impulse buy and beg for forgiveness lol.

I was looking at a 460 but then I saw the BFR in 450 marlin/45-70 Govt. I went with that because I would not have to buy new reloading gear.

That happened in Ohio this year. You really need a big boomer. But for me... it's the 480 Ruger. Next big boomer will be a BFR in 475 Casull/480 Ruger. Plenty of boom.

Simple. 460 goes BANG! 500 goes BOOM! There is a gutteral sound difference between the two.

i like the idea of the teminal ballistics of the 460 round. The ability to create, upon inpact a large expansion cavity (velocity) and great wound channel (penatration). It just ballisticaly seems compariable to rifle rounds out of a hand gun. Yes the BFR offers 45-70, but it is not that pretty on the eyes (only my opinion, not knocking the BFR).
