M1 Garand made by Winchester?

I was talking to a friend yesterday and he stated he had an M1 Garand, but that it was made by Winchester. I thought only Springfield Armory was the only company to make the M1. Anyone else heard of this? Can you give me any history or info on these?

There are four M-1 Garand manf's. Duriing WWII Springfield, the goverment one not todays Springfield and Winchester built M-1 Garands. Post war we got into Korea. Here Springfield, H&R and IHC, yes the tractor builder, produced M-1 Garands. Of all of them the Winchester was the poorest one made.

IHC had the most trouble getting started but in the end might have had the best of the lot.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have not seen the gun, but he says it shoots really well.

Thanks again, always good to learn something new.

Yes, there were four M1 Garand manufacturers here in the states as well as a couple in Italy at some point.

AZ_imuth, The only thing missing out of my brace is a IHC. I do have 3 Springers one of which is a couple of parts from being WWII correct. This rifle has the correct front Front and lock bar rear sight. I have an uncut op rod but it's the wrong dash number.

Tim, I have some other H&R's fro trading stock and I'm currently keeping an eye out for one of the Beretta M1's. My brother has one that I've tried to get from him for years, but he hasn't been willing to turn loose of it...yet.

Good luck in your search for the tractor gun. They are the most illusive of the four and seem to have a high rate of welded receivers when compared to the other makers, so check it thoroughly if it doesn't have DCM/CMP documentation.

I heard from a guy who used to build Navy match rifles, the Navy has a warehouse full of Tractors packed 5 to a barrel. I wish I could get my hands one one. Thanks for the advice and the reminder of the re welds. I have been around the M-1 for a few years.
