Fine tuning pistol ejection
So over the weekend I shot small test batches, and found what I thought was the perfect combination for light target rounds for my XD40. Last night, as we do every Sunday night, I took the whole family out to do some shooting. I was excited to show them what our home rolled ammo was like. After both my wife and daughter went through a couple of magazines, they said they didn't like it.
Turns out the short case ejection scares them. They are afraid they might get burned. I am currently on a light charge, and was going to try bumping up the charge a little to see if I could get that scary, hot case further away from them. Is there any another suggestions some of you might have before I drive off to the range with new test batches? Last edited by TheDutchman19; September 3, 2012 at 07:36 PM. |

Other than increasing your charges a little I don't know of another way. My .40 spits factory loads about 12 ft. but my light reloads about 4. We'll see if anyone else has any ideas.

A lighter recoil spring or a stiffer load... or buy the girls some nice, stylish hats with big brims.

I'm glad to hear we are not the only ones. The recoil spring sounds like its worth a try.

Another solution would be using a more efficient powder. The lighter the powder charge, the less the recoil even when bullet weights are identical. In some cases you can actually reduce recoil and increase velocity, just by switching powders.
Perhaps you need a faster buring powder? |
