Nice S&W 66-1 Unfired in orig box

found it yesterday in a local used gun shop .... ( I apologize no photos yet )..

story was, the orig owner had a pair of 66-1's he bought new in 1980 / and he was in his 80's now and getting rid of some guns. Both guns were the same - 2 1/2" barrels ( stainless obviously ), original wood stocks. One was fired and no box / but clean. One was unfired and in the orig box ( orig price tax said $ 165 I think ) ...but its faded and hard to read... Shop owner told me he paid the guy $1,000 for the pair ....and he was happy.

I bought the unfired one in the orig box for $ 625 / another customer bought the other one for $ 550. Everybody made out well in my view ---especially me ... I have about 20 S&W revolvers ( 19's, 27's, 28's, 66's, 686's, 29's, 629's, a model 10, model 617 ...) / but nothing in 2 1/2" so this gun will fill a niche that I was neglecting.

I promptly took mine home - inspected it, lubed it - and took it to my range and put 100 rds thru it ....( I don't believe in having any safe queens - I'm a shooter - not really a collector ) .....but I still think it was a good value / and it'll be a good gun to pass down to one of the boys or one of the grandkids down the road in a few years.

Fair price

I think your price of $625 for the unfired model 66-1 snubby was fair. I bought a 66-2 snubby in excellent condition about a year ago for $500, but feel that I got a bargain, as I would have paid more. An unfired model should definitely go for over $600.

These guns are so well loved that one in excellent condition, like you described, is a great deal not to be passed up.

No - it wasn't a steal / but I think all 3 parties made out well / and that's important.

The gun shot real well yesterday ...with my reloads in .357 mag and .38 spl... / 2" 12 shot group, single action, at 30 feet ... and that's as good as I can shoot with any gun I own standing - without a rest.

Congrats! Doesn't get any better than a 66 in a snubby revolver......and evidently won't! Enjoy yours! Regards 18DAI.

625 for unfired in the box sounds like a decent deal.

If I had to sell all my guns, my Model 66 with the 2.5 inch barrel might just be the last to go. With an action job, it's a fantastic combat hand gun, very easy to shoot quickly and accurately. Plus it looks great.
