Is the CED Millennium 2 Chronograph worth an extra $100.00

I know this is going to be each ones opinion but I am almost ready to unzip the wallet for a chronograph.

So here's the question.

I am leaning toward the F1 Master because of price, but if the CED is worth the extra money, that's the way I would go (only want to buy one and not find out I made a mistake).

What is your experience?

Thanks
Jim

Jim,

The CED is the only chrono that I have found holds real close to my Oehler for precision. The PACT was the next closest.

When friends are over I/they use the CED. When I am alone I use the Oehler, that way if the Oehler get shot...its on me.

100% ditto. Mine is the original CED, but the readings match my Oehler 35P so close it is scary. Usually just three or four fps. By comparison, my dad's old Chrony can be off by 200 fps from the Oehler when the light conditions aren't optimal.

The newer CED M2, I understand, is a little more complicated to operate than the old one because extra features have been built into the same number of buttons on the panel, but I'm sure you'll catch on. The M2's new sky screens self-adjust their sensitivity to light conditions, which I think is a good concept and should help insure consistency. I like that the CED has different screen spacing beams available, so you can increase resolution if you want to. I often run mine on 4 foot spacing to match the Oehler setup.

IMHO, I do think it's worth it.

Just out of curiosity has anyone fired on round through both (CED and Oehler) at the same time then reversed the hardware and fire through both again and then compared the difference? If so what were your conclusions?

I've owned both the ProChrono Digital and the Shooting Chrony Beta.
I've also shot over an Oehler 35 and an Oehler 43 PBL.
I found that velocity measurements on all of them were so close as to be insignificant.
I found the Shooting Chrony to have a confusing interface so I sold it. My ProChrono was stolen.
I cannot justify the price of the Oehlers although I would very much like to own a 43 PBL for the pressure measurement feature.
I just bought a new ProChrono Digital with the computer interface accessory to allow me to control all the functions of the chronograph from the bench and to facilitate easy storage of the gathered data on my laptop.

CED M2

I had a chrony for a while that worked fine and although it had a readout on the front of it, I found that I could read it from the bench. One day I tagged it with my scoped 44mag and it ceased to function.
Chrony has an exchange option when you damage one of their machines. Something like $40 for a rebuilt one or upgrade.

Instead I bought the CED M2, mostly for the remote readout. I've been really happy (and careful) with it. You can D/L all your data from a trip to the range and edit it in an excel type spreadsheet with a standard USB interface. I keep detailed notes when I chrono loads and put all that info into the spreadsheet (weight, type, charge, COL etc.) The CED has a spot for a spare battery adjacent to the one in use. I've run mine 2 full days on one battery. It has a audio feature that will tell you fps of you last shot. It has a huge memory that will not be lost if the battery goes dead and you have to change it in the field. It has a number of functions that I have not even tried yet. The optional case for it is very well made and has straps for a tripod.

I don't have any experience with the more advanced Oehler type chronos that some folks shoot with and swear by but I do know that the CED M2 does everything I need a chrono to do

The Oehlers are no longer available. They've gotten out of the consumer ballistic instruments business altogether. Just professional stuff now.

Nasqam,

You can still buy the RSI Pressure trace. It provides a more detailed readout anyway. Took a little while to get used to mine, but wouldn't be without it now.

Rtpzwms,

I've gone you one better and set the CED on its 2" bar and with its IR self-illuminating diffusers upside down on the Oehler right in the middle over the Oehler's center check screen. Like I said, 2 to 4 fps disagreement in the case of my two units.

Oehler 35P Chronograph is Back! Oehler Resumes Production.
Oehler Research, Inc. of Austin, Texas has announced that it has resumed production of the vaunted Oehler Model 35P Proof-Channel™ chronograph with printer. Company President Ken Oehler revealed to AccurateShooter.com that his company will produce “at least a couple hundred” model 35P chronographs in a “special run” this year. Production of the Model 43 remains suspended. The first new Model 35P units should ship “in late summer”. Oehler Research is taking orders right now, but Ken said: “we can’t start shipping until all the components are in inventory — end of July at the earliest.”
