How accurate is 2010 Standard Catalog of Firearms?
How accurate are the price estimates outta this guy? Only one our book store has... or is there a similar book that is better? It would be nice to be able to look values before I start asking questions here.
Only thing that kinda sucked was there is only one general price measurement... not separate prices for the different models, calibers, or years made... stuff like that. I mean a Model 19 S&W mint and a Model 19-5 mint will probably go for different prices, where in book it says 500 for a Model 19. |

It has quite a few pictures,,,
Not for every model it lists but I would guess that the word "most" would apply,,,
Great thumbing-thru material,,,

Perfect. Its nice to look @ the pictures and you see a gun that catches you eye then you know what it is and what its worth... Instead of being dumbstruck and clueless when you see something new (or old I should say) and you don't know if its a deal or not...

My copy came with a CD-Rom version of the book,,,
I keep it in the CD drive of my work computer,,,
And I can't tell you how many hours of wasted time it has cost my employer. There is a lot of difference between the prices in the Standard Catalogue and those in the 2010 Blue Book of Gun Values. Last gun show I went to every dealer had one and referred to it adamantly,,, It seemed the only haggling was over the rated condition of the firearm. The dealers were sticking to and above the book listed price,,, But at least it was s starting point to argue from. "Whaddaya mean $750.00!",,, That gun is nowhere near "excellent" condition,,, I don't even think it rates a "very good" condition. That's the type of haggling arguments I heard all day.

When someone tells me that "the Blue Book says $750.00," I tell them "sell it to the book."

I think it's nice to have several references and pictures of most things are kind of nice. The Blue Book doesn't have many pictures in the sense I believe you are thinking. Blue Book prices are revised yearly tend to be closest to reality, but they are to be used as a guide. Dealers use them to give them an idea of what something is worth. Like everything in business, it's a tool. Nobody knows the value of every gun and seldom does anyone know half of what is out there floating around other than in a general sense.

I wouldn't put a lot of stock in any price listed in the Blue Book or any other reference because gun values fluctuate like any other commodity. It will give you some sort of start point but that's about it.

Yeah I just want it so I have a reference on where to start. I really dislike when someone is looking to sell a piece and sticks to the Blue Book price and won't go lower... Its irritating. If you need money and I wanna buy of course I won't go full price...

Individuals often sell below Blue Book (BB) price if they need the cash. Dealers seldom go much below BB price. Their prices are often higher and reflect what they consider to be a market price. But, the BB is a great place to start. I buy a copy every other year. They have gotten a bit pricey, but they're still the best reference in book form. You can often pick up a copy at a fair price at gun shows.
I often price between 80-90% condition using BB pricing on a near new gun from an individual as my starting point. A dealer will buy at a much lower price; they want to resell it quickly and turn the money. Make some moeny and go to the next one. Been there with the 5 year old copy of the BB.... look it up and that's the price based on condition.... It pays to keep somewhat up to date if you are interested in buying used firearms. The new edition should be available now as it is published in April. |
