Need help dating 38 S. & W. Special CTG
Apologies in advance; 1st post and I am not a knowledgeable gun guy. Have come into possession of the following 38 Special revolver marked as follows:
Left side of barrel: SMITH & WESSON Top of barrel: SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS USA PATENTED FEB. 6.06, SEPT. 14.09, DEC. 29.14 Right side of barrel: 38 S. & W. SPECIAL CTG Bottom of barrel: 755xxx Left side of frame: no markings Right side of frame: S&W Trade Mark (behind cylinder), MADE IN USA (under cylinder) Butt of grip: 755xxx with a lanyard ring mounted in the center Back of cylinder: 755xxx There is a matching 5 digit number on the frame and cylinder arm There is no model number on the frame below the cylinder or anywhere that I can find. I have attached some photos of the revolver and the holster that came with it. All I have is my cell phone cam so the pics are so-so. Any help dating and ID’ing will be greatly appreciated and if anyone can explain the holster a special thanks as no one has yet figured that out, no belt loops or attaching clips…lol |

Great discription and the pics help confirm.
It's a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905, 4th Change. Serial number puts production ~ 1940/41. No help on the holster. Jim |

Thanks for the info Jim and the others for the dating advice...lol I knew I'd mess up something. Anyone have any advice regarding restoration of any kind and/or possible value as in worth the cost to have it worked on by a gunsmith before puting it up for sale? I've put up a couple more pics of the holster. I just can't figure a holster being designed not to attach to something.

Agreed Kenjesse, don't try to restore it. That would actually make it worth less. Nothing worse than someone thinking that they're doing the right thing and end up ruining it. Don't try to "clean it up" just like another poster said just do a normal cleaning on it and then oil it, but don't oil it too good. No need to have oil running off of the thing. Good luck!
