I used to load for a .30-30 Contender with a 16" barrel. One I liked was the 135 gr. Sierra Single Shot Pistol bullet with 35 gr. of BLC-2. For other bullets, I would base on that, and use the same charge for a 125 gr. such as the Nosler ballistic tip, or drop to 33 gr. for a 150 gr. bullet, as a place to start. Look over the Hodgdon manual, available for free online. They say to use 37 gr. of BLC-2 with a 150 gr. FP. A better place to ask may well be here:

A friend of mine used to load spitzer bullets in .30-30 for his H&R Handi-Rifle. He just used the load data for 150 gr FP with 150 gr spitzers. And it shot very well.

IMR-3031 is frequently one of the better performers in the .30-30. You will never get enough velocity from a .30-30 for truly long range shooting, so I would stick to flat base spire points, as they are generally easier to find accuracy loads for. You usually can't get much help from a boattail before 300 yards, anyway, and a boattail will be longer, sticking deeper into the case where it subtracts from the powder space and raises pressure. Figure to use the Hornady 150 grain spire point, whose part number is the same as the powder; 3031. One can't help but believe they were made for each other. Figure 2.465" COL with the bullet cannelure at the case mouth. Start at 27 grains and work up toward 30 grains. It will go higher in some chambers with some brands of brass. With the 26" barrel it should get you on approach to 2400 fps.

I've been really happy using 125 Nosler BT's over IMR 4198 in my super 14" contender. Accuracy is under 7/8" at 100 yds and I've killed many deer with it. Most are DRT (with good placement).
Check the books for powder weights, but the one I use is medium heavy charges well under the max. I use it cause my gun is SO accurate with it. Good luck. |

Any load that will work for a 150 gr. flat point will work for a pointy point.
