Sig Mosquito ammo test

I had a chance to finally test out a whole bunch of ammo today.

Previous to today, I had put just over 1500rds through my Sig Mosquito. I cleaned it at the start of the test.

To start, I installed the "light" recoil spring and fired 50 rounds of CCI Mini Mag, 36gr HP through the gun. This was completed with no failures. CCI Mini-Mags are my "control" ammo for this test, since I know that they work well for me. If I get a failure on a Mini-Mag, it is likely a gun problem. After the Mini-Mags, I fired 10 rounds of each ammo through the Mosquito. To finish the testing of the light spring, I again fired 50 rounds of Mini-Mags with no failures. I swapped in the heavy spring at this point, fired another 50 rounds of Mini-Mags, then all of the test ammo, then another 50 rounds of Mini-Mags. No failures of any kind happened with the Mini-Mag ammo.

There were a few different types of failures, and it was all caused by the slide not fully cycling. A lot of ammo failed to extract the round at all, some extracted, but didnt cycle the slide far enough to strip the next round from the magazine.

Some things of note:
SK ammo has an oily coating. None of the other ammo had this. Prior to this test, I was really liking the SK ammo, although I had fired very little of it. After this test, Im not so sure.

Remington Viper ammo was very smokey. During firing, this round was one of my favorites, until I got a failure.

American Eagle - The failure that I had with this with the light spring could have been not the ammo's fault. The slide locked back after the first round, as if the magazine was empty. I released the slide and the rest of the magazine cycled fine. With the heavy spring, the failure was real; failure to extract fully.

10 rounds per spring is not enough for absolute results, but 10 rounds each was all I had time for.

Only a few of the boxes made it through with no failures. CCI MiniMag 36gr HP, Remington Golden Bullet, and Blazer.

I am hoping that I have another day to go out and do some more of this. I would like to try out more ammunition as well, although at this point, it is pretty clear that Mini Mags are one of the only choices for Sig Mosquito owners. Im not sure that this test told us anything new.

You will probably also find CCI Standard Velocity (SV), Federal Auto Match, and Wolf Match Target will work nearly 100% of the time using the light spring.

The Blazers work but vary from batch to batch. Some are better then others. The same can be said for the Federal 550 bulk and Remington Golden bullets. Of course one might only work with one of the springs and not the other. Mini-mags should work with either spring.

Good post and I appreciate your time it took to test. I like my Sig and think it is a very reliable gun as long as you feed it what it likes and keep it cleaned and oiled.

You and I would get along very well.....

I was trying a whole slew of .22's, the Remington 504, 597, 504-T, two 597 based Volquartsens, and some pistols. I picked up 43 different types of ammo.

The standouts were CCI Green Tag and some other CCI like the match pistol and rifle, Aguilar is good and makes some super high velocity that shoots well although most hyper velocity rounds shoot poorly.

Did you keep track of which ones were the most accurate? I'll be carrying out a similar experiment with my Buck Mark soon, although I'm testing a range of Eley and Aguila subsonic ammo. I'm testing for accuracy more than reliability, but I'll keep track of both and post my results.

I would have liked to try a few more different types, but this was all the variety I could get at the time. Nothing else was in stock anywhere. Im going to end up feeding most of the leftovers to my 22 rifle, which is a lot less picky than the Mosquito.

I didnt test for accuracy. About a quarter of the way through I gave up and just did semi-rapid fire. I was happy with just hitting the target.

I have done a little accuracy testing on my Sport model with a scope. From what I am able to remember here is what I found.

CCI Pistol match gave the best results followed closely by Wolf Match Target, CCI SV, CCI Green Tag. The CCI SV and Green Tag shot about the same. Next came the Federal Auto Match but there were some fliers I didn't like.

The next were Federal Bulk and Remington Golden Bullets. The group size nearly doubled from the first group of accurate ammo listed above. Blazers had a bit larger group then the bulk Federal and Remington ammo.

Winchester 333 turned my pistol into a single shot pistol and the groups were at least double the size of the Blazers.

I never did check how accurate Stingers, Yellow Jackets, Vipers and a few other rounds would shoot.
