The Institute for Public Affairs (Australia) has published a review of the 1996 "uniform gun laws" to date, and their alleged contribution towards reducing crime and suicides.

The situation in the USA also comes under scrutiny.

James B. Lawson

The Port Arthur massacre of April 1996 provoked new laws and the destruction of 600 000 guns at a cost to the taxpayer of $500 million. The indiscriminate mass destruction of the legally owned property of thousands of honest citizens is unprecedented and was done without any prior inquiry. Prime Minister Howard promised a "safer society". Is it working? The public is entitled to know the essential facts.[/quote]

The full article is available as a .pdf file from the following URL. I would urge you to have a look.

It's pp. 27-28 of the .pdf

Wow, lots of articles. Scroll down to pages 27 and 28 to see the story Bruce mentions.

I sure hope that lawmakers here and in Australia read this and realize that more controls are not the answer.
