Smith&Wesson model 17 question

I love the look and feel of revolvers but never bought any. My father had a stainless steel model 60 and handed it down to me, its a great gun. I felt the revolver itch building in me after just buying two polymer semi-auto defensive handguns and decided to look. My local shop owner had an old worn SW model 17 K-22 sitting there that was from his collection and finnally decided to sell it so I came home with it. Shes not mint, but I was looking for a good old shooter .22lr to have some fun at the range with/squirrel hunting, plus I love the way the wear looks. Anyways it came with some pretty beat up wood grips and was thinking of getting some nicer ones and "dress it up a little" just for the range. If it comes hunting with me I'd probably throw the beater ones back on. So I was just wonder if any of you out there could steer me towards some good grips to get, or websites to browse. I was looking to spending around $50-$60 and getting ones with finger grooves. Pictures of your personal ones would be much appreciated I will post some pics of mine when I get a chance to take some.

Any grips that fit a "K" frame Smith and Wesson will work. I don't know any specific places to look. I'd just do a search for revolver grips and look around and see what I saw.

Congratulations on the Model 17. I got one a few weeks ago and it's a great shooter. The grips that came on it I'm sure aren't the original ones, but I have no idea who made them.

The one at the top left.

I figured the K frame grips would work, but was wondering what the difference between round butt n square butt grips were.

The difference is obvious when you see them. The grip frames with round butts curl under at the back side and square but ones come to an outward facing point.

Your grip frame is round butt.
S&W factory K frame wood finger grooved grips, also called combats will set you back about $100 to $150 for a decent set.
If you register on the S&W forums, all kinds of S&W grips come available on their classifieds.

I just did some quick browsing and thought some of these were pretty nice looking for being in my price range. Let me know what you guys think

PBP I value your opinion highly because I always drool over your revolvers.

Thanks, those Bantam grips are my favorites. They are on more than a few of my guns.

What kind of wood is on the 2nd, and 4th guns in those if you don't mind me asking? Your photos are a lot better than midways so its hard to tell exactly which.

"Your grip frame is round butt."

My 17-3 is a square butt that came with factory magnas. I pick up a set of S&W targets for variety as I'm not a fan of finger groove grips.

+1 on joining the Smith Forum. Check the classifieds for grips.

Regards,

Just for the record...

...his is a square butt. These are some quick pics that show the S&W grips that came on it and the Ajax grips I replaced them with.

Just a thought to consider. If you go to a different style stock/grip then I suggest leaving them on the gun. Different stocks/grips can have a great impact on how you shoot the gun. While you will probably get plenty of shooting at the range, switching stocks to hunt where you will only get a few shots and they must count may have you regretting that decision.

HKFan 9 if you like those Hogue grips you might check out their website. They've got many, many grips that would fit your gun. Also, if you want something a little closer to the original, check out the Smith & Wesson site under "accessories".

S&W sells some very nice grips and they are pretty cheap. I got these walnut ones from them.

Thanks for all the feedback, I'm down at my 2nd (college) house at the moment taking care of a few things so the K-22 isn't with me so I have plenty of time to make a choice. The only firearm I keep with me down here (I live off campus in a town house so don't fear!) is my PM9 for CCW. This is also the reason I haven't posted pictures of the new revolver yet. I have been looking at all the basic sites like Midway and stuff, just didn't know if anyone of you "swore" by maybe a small shop that sells really great grips that may not come up on a Google search.

This is very true. Any change in the grips or the way you grip them can change point of impact significantly. I can move the point of impact three or four inches at 25yds just by putting on thin leather shooting gloves.

Hogue makes a good wood grip. I've had several pairs over the years. I thought they were "it" until I tried a set of Herrett's Roper grips but those will set you back more than you wanted to spend. Unfortunately I don't have any good pics of the Hogue's I still use or the Altamonts but here's a low-res shot of the Ropers and a decent shot of a M15 wearing Ahrends grips. They're pretty comfy too and not too expensive.
