Mossberg 500 repairs

Used my 500 for some skeet occasionally in early 90's and then I noticed a round gouge in the chamber and took it in for repairs. The gunsmith said it was caused by a screw (in the bolt action I guess). The last time I fired the gun was mid 90's at the range firing slugs, everything was ok. Now just rack it when cleaning occasionally. Found a broken pin from the gun on the floor and noticed a long teardrop shaped gouge in chamber. I can see the pin sheared off or maybe had a hairline crack that finally gave way and it split in two. It's easy to see it came from the side of the bolt. Gunsmith said if it broke out all the way the bolt could shoot out the back of the gun. Correct or not I dont know but I think the pin is called a "bolt lock pin". This gun seems like a lemon especially for the little use it has had. Does anyone have an idea what could cause these problems. All the smith is going to do is replace the pin but there must be something causing these problems. I dont trust the gun anymore.

Mossberg

Sir:
The up-shot is - if you don't trust it, take it out of service!
I wouldn't trade something to someone else that I don't trust.
Probably, after that pin is replaced it will be O.K. bespite the "gouge" but there would always be that doubt!

The broken bolt lock pin seems to be a common problem with Mossberg 500's. My brother and I both have 500A's and the pin on both of our guns has broken. My boss's daughter's 500C had a problem with the pin also.

Mossberg won't sell me a replacement pin because of liability reasons, unless I was a certified gunsmith. Numrich sold me one.

It looks like the bolt lock is designed to block the firing pin from striking forward far enough to hit the primer if the bolt lock is not in the up position. So, if the pin is out, the bolt lock will not go in the locked position. I could be wrong.

I wonder if I could use a roll pin in place of the factory pin for the bolt lock pin? It looks like the pin just holds the bolt lock in the bolt, and I don't see that any pressure is put on the pin ( i.e. to shear it ).

Either way, I'll wait until the factory part comes in before shooting the gun.
