p7 refinish what to use?
It is summer now, and this year my p7 is starting to rust, i oil it once a month and every time i shoot it.... but it still seems to rust several places in particular and i am thinking about a refinish....
two places that are starting to rust and i am curious to know if there is a stainless replacement, are the takedown button, and the grip screws(i imagine these are easy to get if one just knows the correct size)..... anyway i am thinking of sending it off to get refinished, but i have no clue with what and i would love to hear some ideas.... i think i want something black but i have not totally ruled out hard cromed... also i need someplace to do it, and preferably pretty quickly thanks Nick |

![]() I np3-ed the center one about 5 or 6 years ago now. Great gun, its my carry and I have it in the "field" a lot. No rust now in hot and humid Houston. I recommend it for rust! |

NP3 or Roguard Peter?
Looks black to me. I am thinking of having my new Sig 226 Roguard'd for carry. I like the black finish.

Robar's NP3; perfect (and now-years of confirmed experience with over 10K through it).

Its NP3-ed (I really think...). It is sort of a greenish black color and feels like teflon everywhere. It has been a while so I honestly don't remember the details much. It was about 150$ to do and took about 3 weeks to complete. It made a huge improvement in trigger pull for some reason.

My vote would definitely be for the NP3 as well. Its self-lubricating, has a lifetime guarantee, and the internals can be done as well which is why some report a nicer trigger pull afterwards. Its color is darker than stainless which is another thing I like about it.

Go with Tungsten Diamond Like Carbon. It's a PVD finish (physical vapor deposition finish). Super hard, very thin. I'll be having my P7 sent to them soon.
BODYCOTE/IONBOND is the company that does the coating. It's harder than Nickel, much more abrasion resistant and has better lower friction. If you like the coating on the stainless steel slides of Sig pistols this is your coating. |

Peter, I don't remember you saying that you NP3'ed your PSP; I remember you saying that you had someone local refinish it in some sort of teflon based finish. NP3 is usually a different color than black.
Chui, I thought Bodycote doesn't deal with civilians anymore. |

Its been a long time since it was done. I had a local shop ship it out and I vaguely remember it was NP3-ed. To me it was a "one" off type of thing and I really did not care what it was. I would never do it again to another gun, so it was a non-hard chromed approach.

with out a doubt the best and most durable finish is COBRA CHROME done by TRIPP's .I don't belive that you can get Robar to NP3 a P7 for $150.00any more it is probably over $200.00 now. If you have never had a weapon done by Tripp's you will be surprised and thrilled when it is returned to you .they realy do a superb job ,it will look better than new .

I'll start by saying I've never had a gun hard-chromed. But there was a guy in my CCW class that had something like 13 P7 pistols - some hard chromed, some in NP3, and the others with the factory finish. He said he was happy with the hard chrome job by Ford's, but rather disappointed by Tripp's and would never do business with them again. Whatever that means - I didn't ask for details. BTW, the NP3 was his favorite by far.

I have 'blue' (carbon) guns.
i have aluminum guns. I have stainless steel guns. I have one hardchromed gun. I have one NP3'd gun; it does NOT rust. The others do....although the S&W M38 and the Taurus PT22 are suprisingly corrosion-free. Mostly. Someday ALL my guns (except the gold 1911 I'm working towards; www.apwcogan.com) will be NP3'd. If you want 'black' be thinking "Black T".... |

If he was uhappy with the job Tripp;s did than all he would have to do is call and speak to Virgel Tripp and it would have been taken care of .I have never heard anyone complain about Tripp's work ,NEVER

I wish I had known that when he told me, or that he had called them with whatever concern he had. I guess that's all you can ask from a company...that they stand by their work and will do whatever it takes to make a customer happy. If I ever see him at the range again, I'll let him know.

Hard chrome by Ford's....but I have heard nothing but praise for Tripps too...many P7's over a the Cult have been done by virgil...A1 work
I shot a firend's NP3'd P7 and found it a bit slick for a CCW gun....YMMV |

Well I dug out my notes and receipts and the work was done by Briley on 3/1/02. It just states refinished and coated. Looking at their web site they list tefloning for $300 so it was probably something like that. Reading up on NP3, mine is not so much of a grey as a light greenish black.
Regardless, It has not worn much, there is no sign of rust and having routinely carried my little P7 here in Houston heat and humidity I can state it works and works well. Give Briley a call if you want to know more. |
