Do the USA neeed the UN?
Do the USA need the UN? It seems to me as if they dont really care what the UN thinks or decides. Bush will go to war regardless what the UN says, so why do he bother to have an Iraq resolution?
Do the USA need to care what the UN says, and with this i mean in all issues, not only the Iraq problem. Their opinion is that they will never take order from anyone except themself. So why are they member in the UN? The problem is that the UN has no power without the US support.... So, I think that they UN never will play any major role Internationally. Sure they can condemn what is happening in for example Zimbabwe, but what are they going to do about it? Why dont leave the UN, kick them out of Manhattan and use the UN building to something better? |

You answered your own Question. The UN has no power without US support. So, does the US need the UN? No. Does the US care what the UN says? No.
The UN's function is life is to give the small nations the impression they actually have a say in what happens in the world. And your suggestion about kicking them out of NY would get my vote. |

I don't understand why we need the UN. The UN has out live it usefulness and has constantly trying to impose its will on other nations. I’ll be glad the day the UN be disbanded.

So why not close it? What is the point of this organization if the worlds most powerful country dont care about it? I
t has no power without the support from the USA, and in has no support from the USA, so it has no power. (pretty dumb sentence, huh? ![]() I think the UN seems to be a place where they only discuss things, not solve them. The US is the one that most often has to go in and solve a problem.... |

Short answer:NO!
In more detail: pro: It gives nations a place to talk. ![]() Since, however, it seems to have become an organization whose sole purpose is to loot the American taxpayer, I say kick the bastards out of the US and let 'em set up shop in Paris... ![]() And while we're at it, any nation that is on the US foreign aid tit, and does not offer us full and complete support at all times goes off. Permanently. Or we forclose on the SOB's and kick 'em out of our new property. ![]() Tom |

Screw the UN.
Much like any buracracy, it outgrew the purpose it was created to serve. The goal of the UN was solely to prevent the start of WW3, not humanitarian intervention, or to meddle in the affairs of sovereign nations. If you think the US ignores the UN charter, ask the UN buracrats about article 688. This new resolution violates one of the most unequivical tenets in the UN charter (art. 2). Screw the UN, it's an impotent, self serving, cesspool that only exists to "reign in the power of an America drunk with power". ![]() |

The UN has basically never backed up any of its resolutions against IRAQ in the past. Why pass resolutions and then let them be violated time after time. The UN is basically where other small countries come and beg big brother USA for help. It is very obvious that US citizens want their own country and not a global goverment. I see no purpose for the UN.
The reason that the UN security council voted with the US on the latest resolution was very simple. THEY HAD TO!! If the would have voted against it there would have been serious thought about the need for the US to be in the UN. Without the US in the UN it is basically nothing. |

The UN ain't nothing more then the "wellfare" office for nations of the world.
And the US should get out of the UN now! And order them other nations off of American soil with in 24 hours of chaining the buildings doors shut. Damn parasites! |

I think the overwhelming opinion on TFL is that the US should pull out of the UN. If you are looking for a better representation of what the general opinion is of the UN in the US, you might want to post the question in a more neutral forum.
The UN would shrivel up into a small mom&pop dime store without US support. Preferably on someone else's back yard. Takes in money, gives out a little to the poor, gets pushed around by the local mob. No gun behind the counter, of course, and waits after the crime for the big cop USA to save them. |
