Taurus solid copper ammo-experiences?
When I got a new .45 this weekend, the dealer threw in a box of some Taurus ammo that features a Barnes solid copper 185 gr. hollowpoint. Man, you can see all the way to the back of the bullet in that hole! Like a copper pipe! Anyone heard anything about this round or tried it? Thanks.

I have not used that ammo, but I did see some test results several months back. While I do not remember the exact figures, the bullets expanded well and the penetration was also good. They were the equal of any of the premium ammunition.

I bought a box several months ago at Cheaper Than Dirt. Shot 10 rds at some metal plate targets. All I can say is they shoot just fine in my PT-145, although to a somewhat different point of impact than 230-gr hardball (which is to be expected).
Haven't tested any in an expansion medium yet.

JUst in 45
I checked their website and the 45 is the only load for Taurus ammo. It would depend on whether Barnes makes the bullet in other cals, I guess.
They might come out with other loads if they do. Saw a review from Handguns mag. when I put "Taurus ammunition" in the Yahoo search. The test velocity was a little lower than stated, but the performance looked pretty good. I still almost need a flashlight to see down into that nose cavity to the bottom! |

Dude they make them in several cals, I see the display at my gun shop all the time. They are expensive.

AmmoLab.com recommends this load for the short (3") barreled 1911 varients. I got some for testing and for my wife to carry in her Kimber Ultra Carry (first series). If functioned fine in both her gun, my Ultra CDP and a Compac Aluminum. I hope they continue to offer it as the CorBon version is a +P. That just makes it harder to control and reduces the probable penetration by accelerating expansion.

Ammo cals
OK, if they make it in other cals, I will have to look somewhere besides the company website to find out! Would think that would be the authority?
Maybe they don't update it or something. |

Taurus MADE them in .45acp only, with plans to do others. Taurus no longer makes them, sadly enough. The Taurus Hexs are NOT loaded hot, and are normal pressure rounds. I will not buy the Cor-Bon crap due to the stupid +p ratings.
FWIW, I trust my life to my Taurus Hex's in my 220 everyday, on and off duty. I do know they are very accurate, very reliable, and are hell on small varmints. I have retrieved several expanded slugs, and they do quite well. |
