Good 5-round AR Mags for Hunting?

I found out it's illegal to hunt nearly anything in Florida with a magazine larger than 5 rounds. Centerfire, that is.

Does anyone make a good 5-round AR-15 magazine? Preferably in .204 as well as .223.

I'm trying to figure out whether the law applies to wild hogs. It applies to "game mammals" and "resident birds." A hog is considered a resident, but I think it may not be a game mammal. In 2020, it was not a game mammal, but I want to be sure nothing has changed.

It would seem silly to prohibit large magazines for hogs, since they sometimes charge. I would still need small magazines for other creatures in any case.

I see Anderson makes stainless 5-round mags, but I thought I would ask anyway because people here might know brands to avoid.

If you can't find one that works for you, you could check your state laws. It's often true that, for hunting purposes, temporarily blocking the magazine to limit the capacity is acceptable. If it's legal in your state you might be able to rig something simple that goes in the magazine under the follower and keeps the follower from dropping down enough to hold any more rounds than are legal. Sort of like the "plugs" they make for shotgun magazines.

Here's a company that sells them. I have not done business with this company--I'm not endorsing them, just providing the link.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was thinking that if a mag is $12, and a limiter is $10, using limiters will just cause me to lose more stuff.

I have ASC mags for other calibers and they all work well. Gun Mag Warehouse is a good company to deal with, by my experience.

A block of wood inside the spring loop may work. 3d printing is another option.

plug a shotgun mag... plug an ar mag... ;/

i had two good 5round ar-15 mags that i cut 22rounds of each of the coil spring off and made them 10 round mags... they weigh about the same with the extra ammo and without the extra spring, as the other way around. go figure.

i get mine from CDNN 5 or 10 they have...think they are duramag..stainless steel

they do take a little break in but they work good for me

all i have ever used...but i hunt with my AR's...i just dont like the long mag hanging out in the way

i think the 5 and 10rnd mags are the same length ....they stick out about a quarter inch past the mag well

my .02....ymmv

We use 10-round mag in California. They stick out more than that, probably 1" to 1 1/2". If I need a 5 rounder, I would just put a block of wood under the follower through the spring coils.

Polymer mag is very convenient for that. Its bottom can be opened without tool.

On state land in FL, it doesn't matter if it's a managed species or not, you're restricted to a 5-round mag. On private land for non-managed species you can have higher capacity mags. If you're going with a guide, call and ask them what their restrictions are. Even if it's their private land, they may still not want you with a standard capacity mag.

well i knew my mags didnt stick out very far...and after tango said 1-1.5...i had to look at them...lol

on my rifles with my mags...the aero recievers stick out about 5/8 to 3/4 but the mag well is on a angle

the other 2 are ruger rifles and they stick out about 5/8 i guess

guess it would depend on the rifles mag well, how far the 5 and 10 round mags stick out

i do have both sizes and the box on mine is the same length

It also depends on the design, the construction of the follower and the type of spring used. Mine is a hexa polymer. It has a little push-out key to take out the bottom without tool. Perhaps that feature makes it longer.

Second the recommendation for gunmagwarehouse. Good prices, fast shipping. Duramag is a reliable brand and has 5 rounders in 5, 10 and 30 round lengths. I prefer the 10-round length as it still gives good purchase to tug on the mag to ensure it is locked in. It looks like S&W and Ruger also sell 5-rd mags.

I ordered two mags. Then today I was cleaning out the gun/dining room to prepare for a nursery, and I found out I already had 5-round .204 mags. Bought them and forgot.

I really need to organize. This happens too much.
