Always use a holster
If you're CCW, always use a holster. When I wore a hip holster, there was a retention device (even used a Safariland 070 triple retention). The fellow seen in this newslink apparently carried his fyre-arm in his pocket and had a ND while adjusting it.

This is a video of a podcast with a local Houston rapper who, coincidentally, happens to be a gun enthusiast as well. We can all learn from this. Forward the video to 46:57 if it starts from the beginning...this is gold! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GH_QawYGxLA&t=2818s |

Thanks guys. Didn't see that video before. The grimaced expression on his face is priceless.

Several years old now, but might still be on the web, I was more than amused by the (plainclothes) cop demonstrating to a class of school children handling the Glock "Fou-tay" by shooting himself in the leg when holstering the gun...
![]() Another example, again, from a while back, was the idiot who was "Mexican carry" (no holster) a Glock in his SWEATPANTS!! The gun slipped while he was in line to check out at a store, he grabbed it, and it fired, striking him in the testicles! ![]() ![]() ![]() The report didn't say, but I suspect he was using ball ammo! ![]() ![]() Bottom line, if your pistol does not have a positive safety (aka safety lock) use a good holster! If your gun does have a positive safety lock, use a good holster anyway!!

I remember that cop. He was the only one professional enough in the room to be entrusted with a firearm.

Not a cop. The guy in the classroom was an undercover DEA agent, named Lee Paige. He subsequently sued the government over the release of the video, and his case was dismissed.

As far as I'm concerned, if your job title includes the words "Agent", Deputy", or "Officer" you're some level of cop.

Carry your gun securely and don't play with it.
If it's in a pocket, it needs to be in the pocket alone, with no other items so you don't need to be reaching in there unless it's to save your life. Unless it has a very positive safety, that can't be inadvertently disengaged, it needs to be in a holster. Looks like the Houston rapper's gun was a Glock based on the brief glimpse we get of it. It should never have been in a pocket without being in a hard holster that covered the trigger.

Bought a Glock
When I left the peoples republic in 2008 among the first things I did was a carry permit, the second thing was a new Glock 19. I had a hell of a time with the Glock early on. Then I bought the 3rd thing, holsters. I did my homework first and purchased holsters that cover the trigger.
The Glock is too much gun for my low risk small town lifestyle, it's just too much hardware to pack always. It's relegated to my backpack (murse) now with a spare mag. My LCP lives in my R pocket all alone with the exception of the sticky pocket holster it is in.

I pocket-carry a diamondback Db9. While it is in a "pocket-holster", the trigger is exposed. And, I acknowledge that even though this is a DAO pistol, there is some risk to pocket-carrying with an exposed trigger. I have to take a bit of extra care while doing this.

unfixable
There are certain designs that lend themselves to pocket carry and others not so much. Pretty hard to have an AD with a J-frame DAO for example. Not unusual with some striker fired autos, as many incidents of such exist.
Familiarity breeds carelessness. Ill handled firearms can bite you if you do something stupid or careless. Develop safe /good habits with your gun handling. Draw your own conclusions on the rapper and the Fed or whatever he was. |

There's a practical reason that the use of either an issued or approved holster for an off-duty or Secondary Weapon holster is often a policy issue among LE nowadays.

That pesky safety lever
As stated earlier, me and old Gaston's baby had a rough patch in our early relationship. My G19 is their approx. 5 lb. trigger. It's really well broken in now, more like 3 lbs.
A good quality IWB holster that covers the trigger saved our relationship. I like Kydex better for the backpack with a covered trigger of course. The LCP and I got off to a better start, I bought a sticky pocket holster when I bought the LCP and it lives in it's sticky holder. I do force myself to put a magazine through the LCP each range trip, it's a nasty little thing recoil wise. I would not want to be on the receiving end.

Even with pocket carry, you should always use a pocket holster.
