Full size 9mm suggestions sought.

I am in the market for a new pistol, a full size 9mm. This would be for home defense and target shooting. When I say full size, I'm thinking barrel length around 4 3/4" or longer. It could be striker fired or DA. I think I'd prefer steel frame, but certainly would consider polymer as well. I'd like to keep it under $1000, preferably under $800. First and foremost, reliable! (Please don't suggest Glock, I've had two and while they are perfectly reliable and fantastic pistols, they don't fit me; grip angle).

I currently carry a S&W Shield, and have a Sig SP2022 and a Dan Wesson 15-2.

In all metal frame, maybe the CZ 75? Barrel length 4.6" I think.

In polymer, PPQ comes in 5" model. Also, XD, M&P, and FNS have 5" (or more) versions.

Beretta 92FS or CZ75B. The Beretta has an aluminum frame and a 4.9" barrel. The CZ has a steel frame and a 4.6" barrel. Both are extremely accurate.

I should also mention the CZ P-09. Polymer frame and only 4.5" barrel, but DA/SA, reliable, and (best of all) 19+1 capacity!

Really happy with my Hk VP9.

I will say this ibe again since it still seems to be an outsider, the Canik TP9SA or the soon to be released TP9SF. They come with a holster and it is hard to beat the price. The trigger is also very hard to beat.

It is possible I would not have gotten the HK if I had my Canik first.

I have the full size Smith & Wesson M&P 9, and the M&P 45, both are nice.

I have a pretty large and diverse bunch of handguns, but I have to say my old favorite is probably my Sig 226. I've had it since the mid 80's and it has fired many thousands of rounds without a problem. I've never replaced as much as a mag spring in all that time, and don't hesitate to pick it up when I leave the house. I can't imagine a more reliable pistol and is still as accurate as ever.

Lots of options available. See what your local gun store/range rental has for rent and try as many as you can.

My personal favorites that fit your criteria are the SIG P226 and HK P30L but there are fine offerings from Beretta, CZ and others.

CZ75, Beretta 92, Browning High Power, and 1911 in 9mm are all excellent full-sized 9mm pistols well within your price range. I own all of them and they are all very good pistols. "Clones" have been made of all of them. The CZ75 is my favorite, but the one that fits your hand best is the best one for you.

CZ SP01. You'd be amazed how tuneable the gun is.

I totally agree about the Glock grip angle, couldn't shoot my 21 worth a darn after being usd to the natural CZ grip.

The CZ 75 B SA (single action) is identical to the standard CZ 75 B except that it has a single action trigger mechanism and a drop-free magazine. You can get one of these new for about $550.00. I think this is the best choice based on your criteria.

Since you already have a Shield, how about a M&P 9L with a 5" barrel? I've got the compact version and love it. I'll be getting the 9L soon as well.

I like my cz75b that i got in 2010. The slide release is hard for me to reach but none the less its a beast of fine art. I agree with another poster about the cz P-09 with capacity and forward picatinny for lights and such. If capacity is not an issue and you want to spend less you could try for a Zastava m70 or m88a which are both all steel but you do not have picatinnys and capacity is down below 10 due to single stack mags. These are not very refined pistols, but can be had for about $250. Also the sights are hard to replace on that (I own a m57 in 7.62x25 and am looking into custom front red fiber optic sight that will be done by custom gunsmithing because the front dovetail grove is very shallow and the rear sight can be replaced but depth of new cut can be an issue since there is not a lot of metal to work with before seeing the inside) you could also look into Tri-star and Cannik. Another all metal option could be a 1911 style 9mm but is also a single stack and i believe most are alloy framed now. Let us know what you end up with, you cannot go wrong here unless you buy a Remington R51

Many good choices mentioned. If you plan on doing a lot of shooting you'll want to probably reload at some point. Lead cast bullets are cheap in comparison to jacketed bullets, something to consider. I have 10,500 rounds through my 92FS, I wouldn't have been able to do that with a Glock.

A full size M&P would be my first choice. A Glock 19 would be my second. Nothing wrong with a 1911 in 9mm for that matter.

In no particular order, I would recommend any of the following: Glock 17, S&W M&P, Springfield XDM, Beretta 92FS, Sig 226, Ruger SR9, Walther PPQ M2. I'm also interested in the new Ruger American, but have not handled one. Try as many different guns as you can and pick the one with the features you want and that fits you best.
