SAAMI Specs 223 Rem

What is the Minimum case length for the 223 Remington according to SAAMI?

I have found to different diagrams.

This one Looks Official and says 1,760 - .030.

http://www.saami.org/pubresources/cc...0Remington.pdf

This one is from SAAMI's web site and it says 1.760 - .020. Page 41.

http://www.saami.org/specifications_...wnload/206.pdf

Which one is correct?

Either will work.

One will just need trimming a little sooner

.010 won't make any practical difference

Thanks, but I'm more interested, curious as to why there are two different specs. One of them has to be wrong, no?

The file in the second link is a document that's about 10 years older than the first link.
It's likely that, some time prior to the update, a SAAMI member asked for more leeway with the cartridge, and the board said "Hell yea! Lower quality standards all around! More profits!" (Remember - SAAMI members are all for-profit ammunition and/or firearm manufacturers. )

Neither is wrong.
They're just from different time periods.

It could also be the NATO spec changed to allow for the tolerances of all the various member country's ammo, so SAAMI copied it. I don't know. I do know SAAMI and CIP have had talks about how they might better standardize each other's methods and drawings and so on. So more changes may be in the offing. I just have no idea when. Years, seems likely.

Lots of M14 shooters used to trim their ammo back -0.040" when the cases were new, just so they wouldn't have to trim them again during the life of the case.

As well bolt gun shooters will trim theirs upwards of .020 for the same purpose.

Thanks Bart, thought were were discussing SAAMI case dimensions and case length, but OK whatever you want to talk about is fine with me.
