Using N140 instead of Varget
I have an AR10 B and M1A and have been using Varget as my powder, until recently. I was given an unopened 8lb can of N140, (guy no longer want to reload his M16). Anyway I have it and was wondering if anyone has used it in their M1A or AR10. Most of my reload manuals are old like me, and I can't find any data using N140. Both rifles are service grade and I've be shooting Hornady 168gr BTHP with Varget for years.
thanks |

From VV's web site.
N140 A true multipurpose powder, which can usually be used in place of IMR4320, Reloder 15 or Hodgdon H380. Good choice also for .223 Remington, .22-250 Remington, .308 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, 8x57 IS (8 mm Mauser) and .375 H&H Magnum. Link and data found here. http://www.lapua.com/upload/download...10_2012eng.pdf |

I actually have a free-be Vihtavuori 2001 hand book. As stated:
N-140 308: HPBT sierra 168 gr. 38.3 to 42.9 gr. 2313 to 2558 S/S |

I tried N140 in my .308 Savage and found it resulted in my most accurate loads.
I had used Varget, R-15, and H4895 with a lot of experimentation with 150 through 175 grain bullets. The N140 got the best results by a small margin and had the lowest standard deviation in velocity when shot through my chronograph. I think part of the reason was that it meters so well. In my rifle, N140 is my go to powder. |

Thanks, I got the vv page and will start my first test rounds. I like my varget and have been using it for years but have one 8lb can left. The biggest problem is getting the bullets.

I like the N140 and N550 powders. There has been some speculation concerning the ongoing VV commercial concern. I guess they are being closed down if someone doesn't buy them.
