So, who did the refinish work? The picture is nice, but lacking some detail. Any chance we can get a close up and more info on the job?

I'm always looking for a new "refinish" guy.

Does look good. I find that it's a very interesting look with the old school Pachmayr grip on it, because I've seen half a lifetime of old blued K-frames with the Pachmayr Gripper SK-G on it (many of them...my own,

) but you just don't too often see a full-lug L-frame with them because they made many less of them than the stainless L-frames. That it's a fixed-sight 581 makes it even more uncommon.

The look ends up saying, "I'm a Model 10 that's been working out!"

What's the recent history on this revolver? Did it come to your hands with a major finish problem? Why did you elect to send to S&W in the first place? Do you have any "BEFORE" pictures? How much did Mama Smith charge for a re-finish, and what was the turnaround time?

Or is there a whole other thread on this that I missed?

I had a thread on it about a year ago after I bought it off my Aunt whose husband passed away.
I do not know the history for sure but think it was a issued police revolver. had a lot of holster wear on both sides of the barrel and some scratches here and there....I know there was a lot of character to this revolver but decided to get her fixed up since she shoot so well.....

Turn around time from the S&W factory was 5 months..........drove me nuts. Price was a little over $200.00....hated to pay that much but I wanted that beautiful S&W finish

From my angle (that is to say, not having had to go through the wait and paying the bill!

) I would say that neither was a bad deal.

Outside of someone doing a low-cost duracoat job or a home-brew "cold blue from a bottle", I can't see how or where...ANYWHERE, you'd get a professional finish for less than $200.

5 months? That does seem like a long time for a guy to wait on a project, but I'd rather see folks with new, broken or "needing attention" guns get their work done before a guy who simply wants a new finish on a 30-year old revolver. And if the quality of their work is up to the standard you expected, I can't say that 5 months is too long to wait. I'm pretty sure that most of the known or popular handgun craftsman of note take at least that long, many longer, to perform any manner of work.

That sounds to me like a pretty good package from Smith & Wesson.

Also sounds like you are happy with what you got back... the whole deal sounds like a winner. Nice gun!

That refinish looks great! I like the appearance of the 581s and 681s.

This thread is gonna force me to go "rescue" my 681 from layaway at the LGS.

Use the same camera, take pictures outside in the shade, early evening is good. There should be enough light to get good pics without using a tripod.
Don't use flash. I like to use a dark background.
I'm no expert but this works the better than artificial light for me.

That is a really nice looking gun.

On top of a nice looking gun, it shoots really well.

I bet after you got it back and fondled it and shot it, the 5 months wait was but a faint memory
