quality control question

I've pressed about 150 rounds (.45 ACP) with a Lee Classic Turret press and all of them are with specified tolerances.

Once a press is dialed in how many are still measuring each finished round and how many just take random spot checks? Those that are doing spot checks, at what point were you comfortable with the set up to trust the machinery?

I use a dillon 550b for pistol. I check powder charges at the beginning of each session. Once oval is set I rarely check it unless I make change? But I am not typically shooting pistol for top grade accuracy.

I use Lee turret press and pro auto disk. I weigh charges and check for oal every 5 rounds, then after 50 or so without variation move to every 10. Takes more time that way, but prevents failures and time consuming corrections seeing as how if i find a problem, last 5 or 10 gets pulled and redone. Trust the machinary? Never. As a machinist i tell you anything man-made cannot be trusted.

Hi,

I load on a 550 and once I'm satisfied I usually don't do any spot checks. [shameless plug]I also use my Press Monitor to watch my actions to make sure I cycle it completely and rotate once between cycles[/shameless plug]. If I'm loading more than 500, I'd probably do a check of the powder weight, oal, crimp, and case gauge fit at the 500 point. I do post ammo checks on all ammo - I case gauge check every round.

I load on a XL650 an check the 1st, 2nd, 3rd , 5th, 10th, 25th,50th then every 100 thereafter.

I love your point of view, Crankgrinder. The only thing you can really trust is that, eventually, you'll need to repair or replace something.

If you are loading lead bullets it's good to check maybe every 50 or so because lead and or lube residue may build up inside the seater die and cause progressivly deeper seating leading to overpressure or other malfunction.
