What is the best way to make a HD AK?

I'm thinking either a laser aimed pistol or a red dot aimed rifle with a side folding stock.

Do I buy a base gun and add or can I do a ground up build like an AR?

Accuracywise, I would like it to be a 4MOA or better gun. I'm thinking most shooting will be cheap ammo 0-50 yards.

Your thoughts?

Pistol or AK for defense, that's not like choosing coke or Pepsi. For me a pistol is a better overal home defense vs a rifle.

The 3 things needed for any HD rifle:

1. Quality ammo that won't over penetrate but will stop bad guys. For me, in the AK, it's Hornady SST. Nasty ballistics.

2. A light. As a responsible gun owner the target must be identified as a threat before the trigger is pulled.

3. Red dot optic. Not necessary but it aids in fast CQB shooting.

Plouffedaddy nailed it.

The only thing I would add is that any russian ammo with the Sapsan 8M3 bullet will fragment very well at HD ranges and allow you to practice more with HD ammo at lower cost vs the Hornady SST.

+1 for pistol, or a shotgun w/ birdshot.
I am an AK fan and have/ have had several. I wouldn't really consider it all that great for HD: large muzzle flash, incredibly loud report, and anything short of often hard to find frangible is going through your neighbors' (plural) walls. The short barreled Draco is even louder with a larger muzzle flash.

Good luck.

I know you may think your 9mm with Gold Dot JHPs won't penetrate more than an AK with Hornady SST rounds but it's simply not true. A good source of information on this is boxotruth, but there are other good resources that document this.

Hmm

I was trained with m16-m2 but I prefer to keep my pistol close at home. I am more confident with it.

An AK would be a great HD gun. Just make sure to have ammo that is loaded so as not to puncture too many walls. That aside most handguns will shoot through more walls than would be good to have shot through anyway so really an AK would be a great HD gun.

Add a 1x red-dot sight and/or laser along with a flashlight for target identification and you're good to go.

I chose pistol over AK. I have night sights -vs- laser. I am faster to target, and I place a high value on having a free hand. I drill, in complete darkness, a couple times a month...moving quietly thru the house, pretending the boogie man, or men, is somewhere waiting for me. BUT, for the real deal... I know I would clear the bedroom area ensuring the safety of my family and stay put right there, while my wife dials 911.

I think a pistol in 40cal would be more ideal than any rifle for HD, If serious about HD I would highly suggest a shotgun - its hard to beat at close range for stopping power.

Plouffedaddy is 100% correct.

The AK in the pictures is about as good as you can get, as long as the stock is strong. The Tapco tele-stocks are easily broken so I would get something strong even if it's the standard infantry issue wood stock, or any of the better quality stocks that can be had.

4 MOA is well within the capability of any AK with a good barrel. In fact, I have made several that do 2 MOZ.

The only down side to an AK as a Home Defense Weapon is that some homes are in very crowded areas, which means you MUST load frangible ammo in the gun, which is costly You can practice with the good cheap imported stuff, but the "home magazine" should be loaded with frangible bullets. I live way out in the country, and so I can use an FN-FAL loaded with 180 grain "Elk Ammo" for a home defense gun if I want to, but city dwellers are not so lucky. My nearest neighbor is nearly 2 miles away.

A 7.62X39 is about like a 30-30 Winchester in power, and in fact, the FMJ bullets that come surplus will out penetrate a 30-30 soft points when it comes to walls and auto bodies. Defending your family with a deer rifle is ok as long as you don't endanger someone else.

Galser Safty Slugs used to be available for the 7.62X39, and they may still be.
Anyone else know of any frangible ammo available, please chime in here

There's potential for gun comedy here. An HD AK needs a box-top converter. Surely someone with time and a camera and a sense of humor can hook that up!

Pistol & Shotgun are best suited to the HD role, but the AKM is also a good choice.
I have mine set-up for sub sonic ammo fired through a sound suppressor.
