275 gr 338s

I scored a box of Speer #2411 275 gr. 338 bullets at a gun show this weekend for $15.00. I thought I might test the strength of my Ruger #1's scope mounts using RL 22. Data is pretty skimpy since few are using much over 225s these days. The net suggests loads ranging from 72 to 75 gr.s. (must be heavily compressed) as max.

I think I'll contact the manufacturer, but does anyone know of any other reliable sources while I'm waiting for a reply?

My old Speer manual, that still listed the 275s, either didn't test RL22 or didn't print it.

It would help to know the complete caliber designation. .338 Federal? .338 Lapua? .338 Win Mag? .338 RUM? .338 Marlin?

From everything I've found, 73 grains of Reloder 22 is a compressed load under the 250 grain bullet. I've found no data for 275 grain bullets in the .338WM. It looks like you're on uncharted ground, which may not necessarily be a bad thing. I'm frequently in uncharted territory when I'm playing with light loads in rifle cartridges and I've found some really cool loads by careful trial and error.

Be safe and prudent.

Accurate reloading .com lists two loads for the 275gr Speer...

one for a Dakota rifle with a 23" barrel, they used 74 gr.s of RL 22

the other load was for a Kimber with a 24" barrel, they used 75 gr.s of RL22.

I'd like to start at about 69 gr.s and work to about 72 gr.s and see what sort of velocity my 26" barrel gives but I think I'll wait until I either dig up some info from an older Reloader powders guide or get info straight from them.

The other consideration is, I only have the one box of fifty bullets, I'd like to use as few as possible to try this powder.
