Source for once-fired 7.62x54r brass?

Since most people shoot the milsurp stuff, it seems brass is hard to find. Should I just buy some wolf gold and save my cases or is there somewhere online I can find brass for less than sell-a-kidney prices? I'm also wondering what people who do load the cartridge have seen in accuracy improvements over run of the mill milsurp ammo. Seems like the improvement would be pretty big, but I'm jsut wondering what I'm trying to get myself into here...

Can't speak of 7.62X54, but I have the same problem with 7.62X39 brass. What I have done is purchase loaded ammo and plink with it and save the brass for reloading. Just make sure it is BRASS and not coated steel, is boxer primed with non corrosive primers. Silver Bear seems to be pretty good, I would stay away from Wolf ammo. MFS also makes reloadable brass ammo (it's a Checz Co.)

Just my 2 cents.

My buys of 7.62x39 and 7.62x54R brass have been one-off events. Stocking up just so I hae some in case I ever do need it.

Not gone for the once-fired 7.62X54, but one of my local gun stores stocks new Winchester 7.62x54R brass, and its about the same price as .270 Win or '06. I have also seen new brass on several of the online shooter supply websites (Midway and similar), but have never checked into wether or not its actually in stock or not.

I don't shoot that caliber, But what I always try to do with any new gun/caliber, is buy 500 new rounds (either military or commercial) and then save the brass for reloading.

I ordered 50 and it is Winchester brass, brand new and primed.

Without selling your left kidney and part of your right, I do what others have suggested, purchase loaded ammo in brass case, boxer primed, shoot it and save the brass. I have a little over 100 rounds of Winchester Metric and Wolf Gold for 7.62x54r and some PMC for 7.62x39. So far I have yet to reload for them but as another poster mentioned I want to have it if I need to reload (or just want to try for better accuracy). Right now it is definatly not cost effective to reload for either of those calibers due to the availibility of surplus and new production ammo. Unless you are striving for competition shooting accuracy in the guns that use those calibers.

I've picked up a few boxes of the Winchester Metrics series 7.62x54 ammo as well.

Big 5 sporting goods had it in my area, and on sale for $12/box if I remember correctly.

I'm still shooting my mil-surp currently, but will eventually get around to shooting and loading some of the brass stuff.

Graff's sells it, or at least used to. Even had their own headstamp. I got a hundred a while back. Also have a few hundred of S&B boxer primed, and 20 Winchester metrics.

I'm a bit afraid of the Winchester stuff, though. One of the catridges has a REALLY thin case rim and mouth. Visibly thin. I won't shoot that one, and the remainder of the brass must be from the same batch.

FYI:
The "Winchester" stamped 7.62x54R brass is produced and primed by Prvi Partizan (PPU).

Which happens to be the same brass you'll find in almost every other brand of 7.62x54R, that claims to be reloadable / boxer-primed.
PPU manufactures far more brass cases for x54R than any other ammunition company. Most of them do not wear the "PPU" head stamp.

Crankylove is referring to the same store where I bought my x54R brass (primed "Winchester"). When I picked up 100 cases, it was actually cheaper than the average cost of standard '06-based cartridges, by about $4 per 100 cases.

I can't tell you if I saw an accuracy improvement.... because I had nothing to compare to. My M38 Mosin has seen only 2 factory rounds since I bought it; and no surplus. Both primers pierced. So, even those two factory rounds shouldn't be used for comparison.
My reloads (and Crankylove's) do seem to do quite well out of my M38 and his M44, though.

S&B brass sucks, in my opinion. I shot 20 rounds the other day, and 3 split the neck. Not acceptable.

Those are filthy cheap. The prices are for primed brass, which the site doesn't tell you (I just opened mine today.)

I've also gotten NORMA cases from Midway. Super nice, and get out that kidney...

I purchace 2 tins of Mil Surp. about 6 years ago, It was brass and boxer primed. I am not sure if it is available anymore. Headstamp reads JMS 02.
I still have a couple hundred rounds left. When it is gone, I will start reloading it.

Reloading JMS 02 brass?

sc928porsche, have you reloaded and fired any of this yet?
If yes:
  1. Was the reloading pretty straight-forward?
  2. How did it shoot?
I ask because I have ~1k rounds of it; have not shot it, bought mainly for the reloading potential. ...Curious about the accuracy/consistency.
