Quickload Bullet File??

I would like to add the 100gr .264 Barnes TTSX to my QL bullet file. Anyone know how to do that? UncleNick??

May be confusing to explain in words. First load/open the Bullet file you want to add the Barnes bullet to. Along the top of the program click on "Main Menu and then click on "Data: Add, Change, etc." and from the drop down menu click on "Projectile/Bullet Data" and from that drop down menu click "Change Data Records in Active File". In the window that opens type in the dimensions of the Barnes bullet and then click "Add/New". The Barnes bullet should now be available in the bullet file that you chose. Clear as mud, huh?

Or, you can load any bullet from that file you want to add it to, then click on the icon that shows calipers measuring a bullet. Up will come the data on the selected bullet. Just change its name and fill in the data on your addition and click "Add New". It will then appear at the bottom of the bullet file until you reload the file.

I called up to get the latest revision with the latest bullets, and the guy laughed at me for not being able to enter bullet parameters myself. I got the update, but have since figured out how to enter a bullet.

It is the 5th icon from the left in the tool bar and looks like calipers on a case:


Length [measure with calipers]
Diameter [measure with calipers]
Weight [measure with beam scale]
Ballistic coefficient [get this from the bullet manufacturer's data]
start pressure [ ~1100 for lead, ~2200 for jacketed, ~ 5000 for jammed in lands]
boat tail minor diameter [measure with calipers]
boat tail major diameter [measure with calipers]

It's the icon with calipers over a bullet for adding a bullet, as the OP wants to do, and calipers over a case for adding a new chambering or a case variant.

Let me caution you that the bullet file in QuickLOAD seems often to have its data taken from bullet illustrations or calculations based on a net density assumption and can be off a little. I recommend you create your own bullet file for each caliber, then go in and correct the bullet lengths or other dimensions if you find the bullet you have measures differently. The JBM site has a good list of lengths that is a work in process. I like to change the name to add the seating depth if there's a cannelure. Bryan Litz's book, Applied Ballistics for Long Range Shooting has lots of bullets in them that have not only lengths but meplat, ogive, and boattail lengths.

I find the best way to do this is to create caliber files. Click on the icon that shows a pair of binoculars next to a bullet. Enter the nominal groove or commercial bullet diameter you are interested in (.224, .308, etc), and it will find every bullet in its all bullet files by brand that fits the diameter +/- .0016" (.04 mm) by default and you then save them in a file which has the bullet diameter as its name by default. That's the file you want to add your own bullets to because it will be kept over when you upgrade.

I like to do this same thing, with one major difference. I open all my "caliber specific" bullet files into one editor and merge them (by hand) into one file. I simply named the file 001_mine.bul, IIRC, so that it comes up first in the list. I now have a bullet file that contains +/-0.001 caliber bullets for all the calibers I reload, across all brands. The only time I ever need to open up another file is if I'm doing someone a favor and running load data on their behalf. Any new bullets not already listed get added to my custom file, as I like the keep the originals unmodified. Works great!
