Hitting the 1 Mile Mark with a Pumpkin in Utah last week
Interesting story on punkin chunkin. I was impressed the 9.5 lb pumpkin didn't disintegrate in or upon leaving the 90 foot barrel.
Now if they can start to work on their accuracy. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100910/...chunkin_record |

The article did not list the muzzle velocity but it had to be hundreds of feet per second. |

The muzzle energy looks like about half that of a .50 BMG.
I calculated muzzle velocity to be about 420 ft/sec in a -0- air resistance environment, so figure it from there. The psychological stopping power of a 9.5 lb, 10" diameter bright orange object coming at you has to be the real pucker factor, assuming they can aim it. How do I enter that into QuickLOAD? The program maxes out at an 8" Cantaloupe.

Let's combine two mile distance shooting events - have them try to knock an Indian off his horse at a mile with a punkin'!

Those punk'ns are nothing more than tiny gourds.....I've got some that will be weighing in at 300-400 lbs by the end of the season. A man could get killed just having one roll over you.

Yeah, but "minute of pumpkin?" It just doesn't thrill me as a shooting term.

I hope this thread stays open! It is gun related! Please don't close!
I've seen these contests on TV. Very cool to watch. I would like to see accuracy added to the contest. Perhaps whomever can get closest to landing their pumpkin on pie-plate could receive bonus points. ![]() |

I bet the expansion was pretty good upon impact, but I'd like to see some JHP pumkin test results myself!

But I do know that,,, A basketball, slung about 200 feet, from a homemade trebuchet,,, Will knock a 250 pound man, wearing full plate armor, behind a Viking shield,,, Flat - on - his - @$$ .

Effing science just did a chicken vs a .357 the chicken won....think about it, size velocity, impact dimension.

My favorite punkin target on TV was when they showed a travel trailer being used as a target.
Punkins blow right through the whole trailer My wife and I laughed our asses off at the level these guys go to to chunk these things the furthest |
