.45 For Black Bear Defense

Does anyone have an opinion on carrying a .45 to my tree stand while deer hunting for protection against Black Bear?

i have a .308 X-Bolt but that 22" barrel cant get a very quick swing and the bolt action is no positive either.

i am balancing between the FNP .45 and the Glock 20 10mm. i would use it mostly for carrying to and fro my stand, if a deer gets real close, ill use my pistol, thats if the scope is useless. also the 10mm has very limited ammo selections at very limited locations. i have to consider that also

Any Opinions?

Given those 2 choices, 10mm hands down. It will penetrate much more than the .45

Agreed on the 10mm. If you're buying a new gun for this purpose, consider a large bore magnum revolver. Less capacity but more power.

For black bear the 10mm is the better of the two for its penetration abilities. I would personally go with the Glock. - actually, I want one!

Some would say go for a revolver and I don't disagree. A more powerful round will always be a more powerful round.

This in mind...
the .460 Rowland isn't so bad ether. In fact, there is a conversion kit for the XD. It is said to be more powerful than a .44 Magnum & in an XD platform that's a lot of firepower. You can also go for a 1911 kit.

I have (3) 45's in the house, (not counting the BP revolver), and would feel adequately armeded with any of them but if I had the option of the 10MM I would choose it for the same reason I like my 41 magnum. More power and better penetration. Others would look at more rounds in the magazine as the deciding factor but power does it for me.
