Are fishers legal to hunt in maine?

I cant find anything in my handbook, and im wondering about it. Some areas report fishers are eating cats so it is a pest, but i dont know i your allowed to shoot, just trap, etc.

Eating cats? How about live trapping a few of them and shipping them out here...We have lots of cats running around...

What an innerestin little critter! I had to run it by the Wikipedia thing just to figure out what it is. Sorry I can't help you determine it's blastability, but I might suggest calling your Game Warden folks.

In most places, fishers are considered furbearers, and are listed with furbearers under method of take. Maine is no different. See pages 43-44 for trapping information and bag limits. The regs mention hunting of fishers and affirm that the State of Maine does not allow shooting of fishers and martins (page 48, item 33).

Hunting regs are a pretty standard tool for determning what you can and cannot shoot.

OK, I had to look that one up too. I was wondering what was going on up there. By the way, that pic is of what we call a martin down here.

Actually, that would be a Purple Martin...sort of like catching big cats (catfish) or referring to catbirds as "cats" when doing bird counts. Martens do get into the NW border areas of Texas if you stil consider Texas of 1836-1846 Republic of Texas former size. Then you would be more familiar with it as one of our native species.

Predators...

Spuscg--Fishers' natural prey is porcupines, believe it or not, and porcupines, as you probably know, damage pine trees, as well as hunting cabins, outhouses, canoe paddles, and anything else which a salty hand has touched. They can be hard on hardwood trees, as well. I even once saw the remains of an aluminum sign, most of which had been chewed off by porkies, believe it or not. There were just little aluminum stars left around the bolts which had held the sign to its post.

Foresters, and others in the wood-fiber business, hate porcupines, and love fishers. So do hunting-cabin-owners.

What I'm getting at is that fishers are our friends, generally. Keep Kitty inside where she can't get at the songbirds. Outdoor cats live a danger-filled life.

Fishers are native to Maine, cats are not. The fisher that wanders around my property doesn't bother me, my neighbor's cats on the other hand...

But if you want to shoot something that eats cats I'd recommend coyotes, but not because they eat cats.

Fisher's are mean little creatures. But pretty cool. When I lived in Vermont we had a couple that lived in the rocks behind our place. We'd see their tracks after the snowfall, but rarely caught a glimpse of them.

I wouldn't shoot one.
