Rules for shipping ammo

Does anyone know the rules for shipping ammo via US Mail, UPS, or Fedex? I don't think that there is a hazardous materials fee like with primers.

Small arms ammunition must be shipped by a common carrier such as UPS Ground or FedEx Ground. Ammunition is not mailable. The cheapest carrier will be UPS.

It is not considered "hazardous material" but must be labled with an ORM-D "Small Arms Cartridges" label.

Here is a quick primer on shipping ammunition:

Not sure if you saw it...

... but there was a thread about shipping primers last week. Might be worth searching. The HAZMAT specialist who popped up in the thread was particularly helpful.

Meanwhile, here's one possible link to the 49 CFR; this particular online app is set up alphabetically; you can check under Cartridges, Small Arms. Either way, ammo appears to be HAZMAT class ORM-D, with no associated numeric code:
http://www.myregs.com/dotRSPA/goto.a...CFR49_hm215G_C

UPS info on ORM-D:
http://www.ups.com/content/us/en/res.../air_ormd.html

Interesting page from a company called Lab Safety:
http://www.labsafety.com/refinfo/pri...cts/ezf156.htm

Looks like you have a 30kg limit, have to get an ORM-D label for your package, and may have some other packaging requirements.

Please look it up, and verify with your shipper. I'm a HAZMAT novice, and I don't recommend that you do anything based on my advice. I'm just pointing out some things you can use as starting points; you'll need to do your own research.

Good luck,

M

FYI, the local retail shipping stores usually will not ship ammo even if the carrier they advertise on their sign has no policy against it. The best course of action is usually to go directly to a shipping hub for the carrier you choose.

Pretty sure that is nationwide...

I've had to take guns to hubs for shipment for repair or modification in both GA and NC; branches have not been allowed to handle firearms, so I'd bet the same will be true for ammo.
