Gun shop words

I was at my local gun shop this afternoon browsing their wares & overheard the following conversation between the counter man & a young lady (as in her 30's I suppose, not that it matters..). She asked for a box of 38sp rounds, he asked what type & she replied "any kind" 'Counter-man' at that point brought out some target rounds and asked her if those would be alright. Her reply was ......
"Will they hurt somebody who's breaking into my house?........."
He therefore brought out a box of jhp's and she left the store with a box of each...
Wonder what her plan was for the evening........ The wife thinks she was out for a bit of revenge of sorts.

Sounds to me like she was just scared. Possibly someone had tried to break in previously and she thought she should prepare herself.

I overheard pieces of a very similar conversation at our Gander Mountain the other day. A college age girl went up to the handgun counter and mentioned getting a gun to defend herself. I heard the clerk ask if she had a permit and explain that she needed one. A couple minutes later, they were discussing whether she knew how to use a gun or knew someone who could teach her. Shortly thereafter, I saw them looking at pepper spray. I wanted to give the guy kudos for being polite, patient and resourceful in his direction to her, but she was still there talking when I left.

Peetza, that can't be right. A "polite, patient and resourceful" gunshop clerk?? I thought they didn't exist.

I'm a little sorry you didn't stick around to compliment him, or better yet tell his boss...

What's up with bashing gun shop guys?
Maybe they are the way there are because people like you come into their store
Name one industry where sales reps, clerks, etc... are all perfect?
Gun shops are getting scarce, I'd close my doors if I had to wait on a bunch of jack's coming through the doors just looken to bash me.
Do you know how many no nothing kind of people walk through the doors thinking they know all? Some of my best friends I met while working at a gun store.

Hold on a minute, I think Vanya was being sarcastic and exaggerating to make a point in agreement with peetzakilla.

That's actually a pretty common question at the shop. More and more first time gun owners are out there, and they aren't as savvy as all of us. When someone wants ammo and seems like they are new, we just ask them pretty much what they want it for. "Target or defense", or maybe "for shooting paper or people"? Sometimes people just don't know the difference and the non-gun people don't know how to ask.

I've actually been pretty surprised at the number of people in gun stores who have no idea what they want or know much about guns at all. They look to the store clerks to educate them, which is sometimes a good idea but oftentimes not. Clerks opinions will be biased at best, or totally uninformed at worst.

I've heard questions like, "Which one is easiest to shoot?" or "Which one is most accurate?" or simply "Which one is cheapest?"

I try to do all my research before I ever visit the store, and pretty much only need to ask two questions: Do you have the gun I want? and What is the price?

With the Internet, gun buyers can research the gun manufacturers' websites, read owners opinions on forums such as this one, research prices, and know just abut everything they need to know before they buy.

Actually, the most common questions by far, in order, are:
  1. "How many bullets does it hold?"
  2. "How much does it weigh?", and
  3. "Which one is cheapest."
Ease of shooting, accuracy and reliability (which SHOULD be the pertinent questions) are not asked often.
