.45 cases getting crushed?
I'm using a dillon 550 with carbide dies and have been getting into reloading but still have some problems that I'm hoping you guys can help out with ...
I have no problem reloading 9mm,.223 but when it comes to the .45 I seem to be crushing cases when I'm seating the bullet in the 3rd stage. It seems that the tolerances of the case are too tight for the bullet?...and when compressing the bullet in it seems to drag/grab the case lip and fold it down Ive tried a little lube on the bullet sides and base to help but it just seems that I can only load one round at a time in the wheel any more than that the crushing of the case happens more frequently.I've checked to see if the turret is loose or there is play but there is none. I'm using hornady jhp 200 gr I think xtr |

You may need to bell your case mouth a bit more. Screw the die with the powder funnel down a bit more.

2 things. Check to make sure you are flaring the cases enough (most likely no the problem). second, make sure your seater DIE is not screwed in too deep. If it is applying a roll crimp and set too deep, this will crush the case. You will need to back it out and then adjust your bullet seating PLUG to correct cartridge OAL.

I would go with the "you need more bell" on the case. Not a lot, just a tad more. If you are loading 45ACP be sure you are using a taper crimp. 45 Colt, yep, roll crimp and ICH is probably right.

I'm glad you took care of the problem. It really sounded like a crimp issue to me.

As I already said in one of the original primer shortage threads, it depends who you talk to. Around here, 99% of stores claim there is a major shortage, and they cannot keep anything on the shelves; even if they get it. However... One of the 'mom and pop' places is selling literally 200,000 primers a day, with no trouble. They have told me, twice now, that they can get any primer I need (except foreign brands) within 2 weeks; in quantities up to 50,000. (per person, since the personal order detracts from the total shippable quantity for their retail business.) Before everyone bombards me (again), with the 'where is this place, can I get a phone number' PMs... All I will say, is that it is in the Salt Lake City metro area and they do not take phone orders. |

He did say that the case "buckled" during the seating operation. Bell it enough so that you neither crush the case, nor find little shavings of lead or copper laying around. Also, remember that bullets with a flat base need more case mouth expanding than those that are beveled. |
