Those are beauty contest winners.

Especially when compared to this little prize...

The Liberator pistol was a single shot, manually cocked, striker fired .45 ACP smoothbore designed from stamped metal parts. It was supposed to be air-dropped by the thousands to French resistance fighters just before D-Day so they could kill German soliders and obtain their rifles (passing the Liberator on to another to repeat the process). "Ungainly" is very charitable. In the end, they were never used and most were destroyed.

It remains the only gun ever produced that took less time to assemble than it did to load it. (26 seconds to poke out an empty case, retract the knob, open the breech, insert a round, close the breech and cock it). GM Guide Lamp division produced a Liberator pistol off the assembly line about every 18 seconds.

I'm not dis-agreeing with you, I just can't bring myself to call anything that killed Nazi's ugly.

And while similar to, it's actually not an FG42, it's an American made Thompson-Ramo-Wooldridge "Low Maintenance Rifle" (TRW LMR)

ISC: You win! Why add all that other stuff, yet take off the bayonet?

Can't have an ugly gun thread without getting the Dardick involved:

I am a traditionalist of sorts when it comes to firearms. I prefer stainless, blued steel and even polymer. Not into the tiger striped.

The Russian Nagant revolver. The English Webleys are near as bad. You have to have a history to be that ugly.

The Liberator pistols came with just two rounds. The partisans where suppose to use it once to kill a German soldier and then use the German's weapon. I had one that I sold about ten years ago for $1000. The guy wanted it bad, but I could have been taken.

The Liberator came with ten rounds in a compartment in the butt. If killing Nazis made it pretty, it is still ugly as there is no verifiable record that anyone was ever actually killed with one. The ones sent to Europe seem never to have left England until they were dumped in the ocean, and none of the ones in the PTO ever endangered a Japanese soldier. A few were used by Filipino police after the war until they got better arms, and some were seen in China, but it seems unlikely they were ever used in any kind of combat.

In other words, like the Pedersen device, the idea sounded good when briefing the generals, but the enthusiasm turned out to be greater than the reality and the result was just one more waste of money.

That TRR8, or whatever the 8-shot spacegun that S&W makes is called.

Those "night guard" revolvers are a close second. Regards 18DAI.

Maybe it's just me, but I always felt the Liberator is cute! Not much use in a gun fight, but cute!
