Failure to lock open upon last shot

Firearm is a S&W 4014 ( a blued 4013 single stack )- police trade in - excellent / functional condition. Came with 5 mags. 2 are failing to lock the slide back upon firing the last round. The others work flawlessly. Mags lips on the 2 seem to be visually symetrical and not damaged when compared with the functional mags. Any ideas ? Help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

There are a lot of reasons that a firearm will not lock open on the last round including problems with the gun, slide lock assembly, or even the shooter. If however you are experiencing failures only with those two magazines then the problem is most likely a worn follower or bad spring. I'd start with the springs if you think the followers look ok, and I'd suggest Wolff springs which are inexpensive and 10% extra power in the 4013 model.

The follower in the mag is what trips the slide stop. I recall the followers in all of my S&W magazines were some type of "plastic" material and yours are probably worn. Contact S&W for new ones. While you're at it I would replace the mag springs also.
