new to reloading

I just purchased a reloader to start reloading .223 rounds for my bolt action savage with a 1:9 twist. I purchased 68 grain Hornady BTHB match bullets and I need advice on what type of powder and primers to use. Thanks for the help.

You'll get all sorts of powder suggestions, I imagine. Mine are Hodgdon powders since that company is nearby and it is usually on shelves. For that bullet weight, Hodgdon powders you might consider are: Varget, H4895, and BL-C(2). You can find data and more information at www.hodgdon.com

I usually use Winchester or CCI small rifle primers--Winchester #6 1/2, CCI 400. Again, that is what is usually what I find on the shelves around here and they work fine.

The Hornady manual is a great investment.

I like W748 and H335 but I am loading 62 grain bullets. Both powders seem to be clean for me and meter good.

I use H335 for .223, .308 and .17 centerfire. Its (relatively) cheap and meters wonderfully.

Bench rest 5 shot group <1 inch at 100 yrds.

I always consult at least two reloading manuals for my recipes. The Hodgdon and Alliant websites also are resources.
