M1999 action
I am fairly new to owning my own weapons and I am looking to get a custome gun made. I was looking at getting a Montana Rifle M1999 Barreled Action, but I would like to know if anyone has had any problems or if they like it. I was looking at doing the stock by Accurate also.
I am also trying to understand the difference between a controlled round feed action and the push feed action. any information on this will also help me greatly as I would like to know. Thank you DJ |

For all intents and purposes, the Montana Rifles M1999 action is an improved Mauser 98 action (or a modified Winchester Model 70, if you like that better). The Montana Rifles action is a controlled feed action, which means the extractor groove (or "rim") of the cartridge slips under the extractor during feeding, thereby "controlling" the round from the time it leaves the magazine until it is ejected. By comparison, in a push-feed action (like Remington or Savage), the extractor does not grab the cartridge rim until the round is fully chambered and the bolt is locked. There are numerous mythical advantages of one action type over the other, but it kinda all boils down to having hold of the cartridge right away or not. Neither is inherently more accurate, contrary to numerous marketing claims.
Good choice of action and stock! Enjoy it!

I have heard that they currently have some back order issues that they are working out, and that it is under new ownership, but that I what I have found out so far. anything else for info weather it is good or bad would be great for me. Thank you again Plowboy

A friend of mine handled a sniper rifle based on the Montana action at the SHOT show a few years back, I think it was Unertl's Precision Rifle.

They got some backorder issues. With a reasonable barrel contour they can finish up a tad heavy, about 8.5 scoped. The actions need some attention by a good smith that's familiar with them. There's a website that has had a fair amount of traffic in the past about the Montanas. PM me if you want more information.
