What is this?

I got this from my Uncle's collection, not sure what it was but I thought it looked interesting. Sorry if the pic is unclear but wanted to keep within size requirements. I will best try to describe it here; The top right of it is dovetailed. The bottom right of the cylindrical part is threaded. Bottom left looks like a hinge piece. There are no marks or writing and does not appear to be rifled. Any help would be much appreciated.

It's an M-1 garand gas cylinder that has had the bayonet lug removed and some sort of funky blueing applied. It's not worth anything to a Garand collector.
