What was old wood ( presentation ) case N frames came in?
I have one of the wood boxes the 6 or 6&1/2 N frames came in, and it has scratches that should be sanded down and refinished.
Can someone tell me what kind of wood were they made from and what type/color stain might look good? The gun itself is long gone so the refinish doesn't have to be the same as original. In fact better it should look different so nobody thinks it was factory original. |

Someone once told me that they were made from the same wood as the grips, but stained.

Thanks, all, I'd thought they might be mahogany but wasn't sure.

I think.......(dangerous)
The "presentation" wood boxes that came with some production guns were mahogney. And some of the wooden boxes for special order presentation guns came in box made of wood specified by buyer. Or possibly selected from a list of available choices. Sam |

I have several tucked away in the attic. Mine are all made of mahogany with a semi-gloss clear finish. Several coats of tung oil after sanding should do the trick.

B4 you refinish it from the original, you might want to see how much it can fetch. I've seen them going for upwards of $100.00 depending on condition and whether or not they also have the correct tools with em.
There's a place in Indiana that sells Cherry and/or Walnut cases that go for about $25.00 that'll work fine for a presentation type case. It'd be a shame to redo a genuine S&W box if someone needed or wanted one. I can't speak for anyone else, but if I had a 6" N-Frame I'd be willing to pay extra for a genuine S&W box regardless (within reason) than for a third party box. |
