Legalities of stock removal

Is there any reason legally why a rifle or shotgun stock can not be removed if the total overall length is 26 inches or over after the stock is removed?

Holding it by just a pistol grip and handguard.

No problems as long as OAL is legal and barrel length is legal. It needs not a traditional stock.
