W-W .44 mag ammo appraisal.
Another ''CC' of a THR post in case of use ....
Shot quite a lot of this stuff, and it has always seemed quite acceptable. As I wanted to set up my SBH red dot today, I put some rounds thru after testing out the BFR and some UMC .45acp ammo. So .... in process of sighting .. recorded speeds (most) .... printer had gone battery flat on me so ... just wrote vel's down. No SD to come - too much like hard work to calculate! This is a 20 shot run .. so quite a large sample...... oh and barrel is 7 1/2" ...... Ammo type ........ W-W MagTech .44 mag. 240 grain SJSP Shot # 1 - 1393 fps Shot # 2 - 1386 fps Shot # 3 - 1382 fps Shot # 4 - 1399 fps Shot # 5 - 1390 fps Shot # 6 - 1415 fps Shot # 7 - 1354 fps Shot # 8 - 1426 fps Shot # 9 - 1396 fps Shot # 10 -1389 fps Shot # 11 -1401 fps Shot # 12 -1387 fps Shot # 13 -1413 fps Shot # 14 -1398 fps Shot # 15 -1364 fps Shot # 16 -1376 fps Shot # 17 -1429 fps Shot # 18 -1411 fps Shot # 19 -1393 fps Shot # 20 -1410 fps Low vel = 1354 fps Hi vel = 1429 fps Average vel = 1396 fps Hi-Lo extreme spread = 83 fps Muzzle energy (based on average vel) = 1038 ft lbs Conclusions... not too great a spread and overall quite a reasonable ammo for bit less than premium price .... tho still not cheap. Time I got some reloads under way again for this cal!! |

Sorry Tams ... didn't mean to confuse. I get the W-W fixed in mind because it uses W-W brass!! In fact - cos I pitched the boxes, I cannot remember the actual source. Someone will hopefully give the correct info. danged if I can remember now offhand!
Just use the stuff! . Hey - check on a box when you're at the store next .. if you stock it. Put me out of my embarrassment! ![]() |

I believe MagTech uses a "C B C" headstamp. Sounds like you had Winchester White Box 240gr loads.

Big 3 - Win/Rem/Fed mostly keep their .44 240's @ 1200 or so. Sounds more like reloads than factory. Velocities listed look a lot like what I'd expect from a 7 1/2 in to 8 3/8 in, using 18 gr of Alliant 2400 under a 240gr. Either that, or they weren't 240's...maybe 200's? 1400 for a 200 is pretty run of the mill. |

OOPS! How right you am!!
![]() Having transferred ammo from original box into my MTM ... which was wrongly marked and I made stupid assumption. On inspecting another lot of rounds in an MTM marked as MagTech ... indeed ..... C.B.C. is correct. So ...... in results above please read WINCHESTER!! Sorry about the confusion, and - looks like a I should pull a round to establish bullet weight too.. Mind you they did feel reasonably ''brisk''. <mutter> - really must check more thoroughly </mutter> |
