Mosin Nagant Video Recoil Challenge

I just posted a video challenge for those that think the recoil of a Mosin Nagant is easy to absorb. Of course it is standing or sitting at a bench but shooting on the ground in the prone postions? Do people still do that?

If I understand the challenge, we are supposed to video ourselves shooting 40 rounds out of the Mosin Nagant, and video the resulting group?

Yes sir from 100 yards shooting prone. If you have a nice bruise include the picture in the video for a little flavour. Good shooting!

try shooting 40 rounds from any rifle with a metal buttplate(10/22 excluded) while prone and you're likely to develop a bruise.

who is shooting 40 rounds from a mosin nagant prone to begin with? CMP shoots are 35 rounds spread between prone and standing. Navy rifle quals are 40 rounds spread between prone, kneeling and standing. I can't see any practical reason to be firing that much from the same position.

a person could go ahead and challenge you to do the same with an enfield, springfield, arisaka or mauser and you would likely see similar results.

Your smart enough not to be an internet warrior that shot their brother's Mosin twice and think they know it all. We often shoot 60-80 rounds a night once a week. We do some pop ups from 200-500 yards and sometimes stretch out to 600 yards (the longest our range allows). Its a 3 hour night with 4-5 of shooting and the same number working targets. Unforunately I may have to enter my own contest to demonstrate..... Can you say advil!

I shot a Vintage LR match with a 91/30 a couple years ago, which was 48 rounds prone at 300, 500, 600, and 800 yards. I don't recall any unusual discomfort or bruise. My buddy did the same match with a K98k, also with a metal butt plate, and he didn't complain either. Both of us were using full power Milsurp ammo.

There were 26 guys out there shooting milsurp rifles, 4 of which were Mosins.

That shoot sounds like a lot of fun! I would love to do something like that. Wednesday 8 of use are doing a SKS shoot 100-200-300 and if the wind is light we'll see if we can hit paper at 400

neither of my mosins are accurate enough to do that, 200 yards is about the max that I can hit oxy tanks at my range with. my Arisaka 44 hits them out to 400 and I'm sure if I got the holdover just right I could nail the 550 yard(my range max) without much difficulty. my other guns are all pretty bad. I doubt I could do much past 200 with any of them.

Does it have to be a Mosin? I shoot 7.62x54R, just not in a Mosin.

gotta love the mosin's!!! i took a elk at 150 yds and a deer at 75 this year

My mosin would be a good 200 yard moose or deer rifle. If you get a good one they are great shooters. The sniper Mosins are a 500 yard gun even with the 3.5 power scope.

I got lucky with my mosin, I guess it has a good barrel. I can hit a 16" x 20" steel plate at 600 yards with mine iron sights.

There is one entry already and its a good one with all 40 shots off quickly in less than 4 minutes. The fellow almost burnt himself on the receiver. He gets bonus points because he talk his dad into doing it :)

There are now 4 video replies to my challenge. This is a must see for Mosin fans out there. These old battle rifles are pretty tough. Anyway one of the replies the cosmo is boiling out of the hand cover over the barrel.

I don't think I'll be joining the challenge, even with a rubber butt pad on my mosin I got a small bruise on my shoulder from shooting just 5 PPU 150 grain SP's prone.

They don't have to be that accurate, the NRA LR target is a 6' square, with pretty generous scoring rings:

You don't have to be contending for a win to go shoot and have fun. I shot a 271-4X out of a possible 400. The match winner shot a 382 7X with a Swedish M41b Mauser. I was certainly toward the bottom, but I wasn't last. Most importantly I had fun.

As to the challenge, some people tolerate recoil better than others. Some of that is physiology, some of it is technique, some of it is experience.

I don't think I am more manly than someone else because my Mosins don't bother me, and I certainly don't feel the need to make a video to prove it.
