Lubed, sized and loaded a few try loads yesterday to continue the .45-90 BP & lead project that I got so excited about last weekend. Even loaded a few 500 grainers to go with the 405gr hunting bullets that I had so much fun with. I really like these WW bullets! :D
This rifle requires a very slight crimp so I had the rifle out for test fitting. When I was chamber-checking the last try batch something felt wrong, hammer just flopped around wherever gravity wanted it to go.
Hunt is on for a replacement mainspring but it looks like I'll have to make do with jacketed bullets and smokeless powder today. I usually save my Sharps for last, kinda like dessert. No dessert today, unless you count the four acres of grass I gotta mow when I get done. :(

Fired 50 jacketed bullet/smokeless powder 30-06 loads yesterday but it wasn't the same. :( Shoulder's a little sore, rifle shot well but it just wasn't right somehow. There's something about black powder and scrounged lead. :D
All kidding aside I may have found the mainspring but I also spent a bit of time on the Shiloh site, figured maybe I need a better rifle. Could easily spend more on sights than I have in my "starter" BPCR.

Turned the fans on plugged the pot in & threw 2 ingots in , put the mold on the hot plate , 30minutes later I was rockin 10# of 357446s on the towel !!!!

Took em & put em with the other 100#s in the fridge !!!

I`m "fixed" tired , gonna run some hot water over me & go to bed.:D

Sounds great but I really wanted to shoot something. ;) Had to look up the bullet, sounds like something I'd like if I ever load for my .357's.

The 357446 is a funny acting bullet it works the best with the gas to the floor !!!

Why do you think that is, GP100man? How fast we talking about?
Spill, armoredman, what kind of bullet will you be casting?

I can shoot it slow at 800 fps but at 25 yds 10 shots spread to 10-12 inches .

Igot em runnin at 1200-1250 & 10 shots will cluster up into 2-4 inches , depends on me really !

I have a 358156 barebottomed (GC removed) HP bullet & it shoots the same groups at low or hi speeds.

My alloy gives up (starts strippin) at 1200-1250, & if I make it harder the HP will peel off or shatter.

Wow, that's really moving! Lube and alloy?

NOE 5 cavity, .314 SP 129gr. Gonna use this for 7.62x39mm, try something lighter than the 160grain Lee tumble lube boolit I have been using.

Sounds like an interesting project, armoredman. Handles show up?
Mainspring didn't. :(

PICs or it did`nt happen !!!!:D:D

Totally off subject & I usually don`t hijack & there is some cast bullets in the pic , but what do ya`ll think of Sixers talents in the leather arts ????

Just for good measure here`s what I done the other evenin , pay no attention to the date I can`t set it on this darn camera anyways!!)

Hijack ahead GP100man! I like shiny boolits! I'm just killing time until my mainspring shows up. ;) Not familiar with Sixers or his work...Didn't see any lube on those shiny boolits. I just ordered a chunk of SPG, you use the red stuff, right?
I'm thinking armoredman's mould handles showed up. I'm considering a similar project for my 30-30. The idea of a plinker centerfire rifle load certainly has merit, I'd like to hear how it's going.

Big Brown Truck brought me a .451 sizer and a nice big chunk of SPG today. USPS shoved a Sharps spring into my PO box over the weekend and it's all good again! :D 45 Colt and 45-90 may get their day in the sun this weekend. Bottleneck cases may have to take a back seat. ;)
Life is good!
Now where did I stash those 45 Colt cases?

What If ????

I take some of these old IDEAL 311413s , GC em , lube em , then swage the noses flat & possibly bump the base of the oglive to .310 & try em in a micro grooved marlin with 16grs. of 2400 under em !!!!

Thoughts????Criticizm ???? Crazy ????

Thought I`d rig a stop for consistent swagin of the nose .

I'd give it a try.

I hollow pointed almost 3/16" off my 257418 (same style) and the groups seemed to get alot better. That was as far as I got tho, and have been busy with hunting bullets for 30 cal lately.

I tried swaging that bullet a little in the lube/sizer, but the nose wanted to sluff to the side. I hollow pointed instead.

Sounds like fun, mind if I watch? Swaging is something I'm pretty much clueless but lately curious about. I'll bring a 94 Trapper to contrast the results with the Micro Groove.
Where'd you find that load? Do you think the gc will be needed? I'm still studying on those, looking for a light load that won't need them.

GP100man
September 25, 2010, 12:51 AM
Well I have`nt formed em up yet , but my initial results was better accuracy with a gas check on even the lightest loads, but acceptable accuracy for plinkin without.

The turdy-turdy is a fun cartridge !!!!:D:D

As you may know a thutty-thutty "fun" load is on my list of projects. I have a minty post-'64, pre-safety Trapper that has spent way too much time in my gun safe. I enjoyed getting into reloading for it recently but that inspired the cast boolit "fun" load project. It will need to be fairly accurate at least to 100 yds so gc just became part of the recipe. A few other projects are winding down so I'll be interested in the results with your project.
Nice pics, BTW. May have to figure out how to use my camera and do that upload thing everyone but me seems to know how to do. :D

Rained here all morning so the coffeepot and Lyman 4500 were well used.:) Lubed/sized all my WW and 30-1 boolits for 45-90 and 45 Colt. Sorted and primed 50 Colt cases and calibrated the scale. Checked out the dipper chart and determined 1.0cc was pretty close to the desired charge for Unique powder. Stepped over to grab the long-neglected can of Unigue......IT'S GONE! No idea what happened, have 18 different brands of powder but I was sure one of them said "Unique". Can't find it.
Choices now are Universal Clays, 700X or 231. Only FFFg powder I have is 777 so that's a no-go.
Break time. Sugestions?

Now I know why that can of Universal Clays was on my shelf, it's pretty close to Unique. Hard to find published loads but Hodgdon's site was helpful. Now I have 45 Colt, 45-90 and even some  30-06 loads ready for a range day tomorrow. Dry spell almost over! :D

Sent some repurposed WW's on a quick little errand today, mission accomplished! Still searching for a load my BPCR likes but will resume this project after a trip to eye doc. It seems to like both the 405 and 500gr Lyman boolits over BP but I can't see the target @ 100 yds. :( 45 Colt load was awesome! 25 yd offhand group just a tad over 3" from a 4 5/8" Ruger Blackhawk! No leading in either firearm, used SPG lube on all bullets. 255gr Lyman Keith boolit over 7.5gr Universal Clays.
Super Grade M70 seems to have developed a knack for crowding five jacketed  bullets into under .8 inches, BTW. Store-bought bullets from a 30-06 but still very satisfying. ;)

Sorry to hear about that, GP100man. That's a tough affliction you have there. Been some advances in the med/pharm fields on gout the last few years, hope your doc is up to date.
Get better soon!

Deer liver and fried balogna will give ya the gout. If you're eating any kind of gut meat or too much red meat , you can make gout worse.

Gout seems to be linked to foods w/ high uric acid.
