I was wondering if any of you use Ivory Soap in your bullet lube. The reason I ask is that it consists mainly of Palm Kernel Oil, Vegetable Oils, Tallow, and Coconut oil. It's the most natural soap on the market that is mass produced under a product name.

How does it do in Bullet Lube?

Ivory soap is an ingrediant in FWFL. I use it, it works good.

No, but I am sure a small amount would be advantageous. The sodium stearate in the soap helps bond the lube to the bullet, IIRC. As far as using the soap for the oils for lubrication, I would think that there would be better ingredients for this (beeswax, alox, stp oil treatement, lanolin, vasaline, parrafin, etc). Just my 2 cents!

I was just going to use a small amount, ie: 1 ounce of Ivory to 2 pounds of beeswax.

I was thinking that maybe it was a good bonding agent, but wanted to verify it with more 'seasoned' members before trying it.

Thanks

I've not tried this. It should be a good hardening agent to mix with toilet seal wax for a really cheap and sticky bullet lube.

The trick will be getting soap to mix with the wax -- any wax, not just toilet wax. It's too bad they don't make Ivory Snow soap flakes anymore.

Soap flakes are easy, dissolve soap in distilled water, pour on cookie sheet, let dry, scrape off. But for the small quantities you need here, a cheese or spice grater will do.

The only use I've heard of for casting concerning ivory soap is for using it for a flux when smelting and casting. The sodium stearate in it acts as a great flux. In fact, you can get pure sodium stearate lots of places on the net.

I've done a little research, and I read somewhere that it is used in bullet lube to help with adhesion.

Thanks for all of the input.

It helps adhesion & raises melt temp, too much is not good though.

As Edward said, its one of the ingredients of Felix Lube.
I've never tried it, but it seems to be a popular lube.

Select Lube References on the menu.

I use Felix Lube almost exclusively. It's that good. Besides, Felix is a great guy. We get together a time or two a year and shoot.
