Anyone here think it would be a good idea? We could have whoever want to post pics on a thread with a poll, everybody votes and then....I dont know, maybe we can work out some sort of prize? Has this been attempted or done before?

What do you guys think?

i like the idea, but it may too tough to make a poll seeing as how there would be more than ten entries. unless there was a "council" if you will that selected the top 10 then we made a poll from that. and PBP would have to be a judge and therefore uneligible :P and Bandit too. they take too many good pics!

Shadi Khalil
June 1, 2008, 11:20 PM
Schwarz, I was thinking the same thing. I think I may have just started another pics post....I'm more of a muse, a visionary if you will. I thought someone would take do the leg work with the polling, voting and all...:)

We could post pics till a certain date then lock the thread and have everyone email me there votes?

This thing needs some organiztion!

sw_florida
June 1, 2008, 11:30 PM
We could set a dead line, like July 31st, so that every one has time to go to a gun range, re-blue, or what ever. It could be three categories: semi, revolver and rifle. Every one who wants to participate should enlist, and then there should be the voting process, and the winner should get $1 or something to his/her paypal account from each who signed up. Those who don't pay the winner are named by screen name at the end for the shame of it.

An idea is to have two categories: hand gun and long gun.

One could enlist in the cometition, one or both categories, by simply saying wich with a post here. More than one will keep track of who is in. By a certain date the contributions must be in. Voting could be by posting here your opinion for the best photo. More than one will count votes. The winner has to give his/her paypal address here at the end. $1 to the winner from each in the specific category.

If some one can polish this idea or come up with something else, please do.

sw_florida
June 2, 2008, 02:00 PM
An idea is to let each person contribute two photos in the catogry(s) for a total of four maximum and give each person two votes which he/she can split however he/she wants between the contributions in the specific category. Long gun posters can't vote on a hand gun picture, just long guns.

Texas Armadillo

Good idea.

sw_florida
June 2, 2008, 03:29 PM
I'm all riled up about the photo contest. How about two prizes in each category? $2 to the winner and $1 to the second place winner? One person could win it all in each category, hand gun and long gun, if he/she is very clever with ideas and a camera. If you only have one hand gun, shoot two pictures of the hand gun in different poses or situations to maximaize your chance to win.

I also think the rules should allow for "artistic" pictures as well, like a cool photo of a muzzle blast, mainly focusing on the blast itself, or what ever you can come up with. If a person contributes a "too artistic" photo that no one will vote on it's his/her loss.

The end date for the contributions hasn't been agreed upon yet, but I think we should allow two weeks for the voting process in case people are away on business or vacation.

An idea is to have two categories: hand gun and long gun.

We could also make some sub-categories like polymer handguns and traditional/steel framed handguns. Otherwise the most beautiful gun (probably a 1911, this is an American forum after all:D) will win rather than the most skilled photographer.

sw_florida
June 2, 2008, 04:13 PM
I am of the opinion that a thought-provocing "situation photo" is more likely to win over a traditional "polished 1911 on the kitchen table" photo, but I could be wrong. If polymer owners fear their guns will not come across as attractive they will have to be more clever with the situation set up. With two photos each in each category and two prizes in each category there should be a chance for a polymer owner to win something. Besides, if you go for a muzzle blast photo, does it matter if the gun is made of polymer or not when you can't see the gun? I like to keep things simple so I'm against dividing up in sub categories, but I'm also flexible and if the majority want a system of subcategories then I'm fine with that.

Or, a photo competition with detailed sub categories can be held after this photo competition, when we know how manageable this relatively easy photo competition was.

Silvanus
June 2, 2008, 04:21 PM
Well, I own both types of pistols and I'm not a good photographer anyway:D You're right though, the (photo) shooter and his imagination are probably more important than the gun.

sw_florida
June 2, 2008, 04:43 PM
I mean, in the hand gun category, does the hand gun need to bee seen at all, really? A situation photo from seedy down town could well carry the concept of concealed carry. Let people bring what they want to the photo competition in the two categories, as I think it should be, hand gun and long gun, and a winner will be found. I have no doubt about that.

sw_florida
June 2, 2008, 05:22 PM
The way I look at the photo competition, a photo of a deer standing on a mountain ridge in the distance could well win in the long gun category without a long gun being present in the photo, while the same photo submitted to the hand gun photo competition would not likely win because the photo would provoke sickening thoughts of cruelty to animals.

Ok, your dedicated staff has considered the implications and ramifications of this thread contest and has reached a verdict. (If only the Supreme Court could work as fast and render a judgement as concise, equitable and benevolent.)

This is now a General Discussion thread since both handguns & long guns are allowed. Move will come immediately after I finish this post.

The consensus of the staff is that involving money is undesirable, fraught (I love that word), fraught, I say, with all kinds of possible unpleasantness.

Carry on with the contest & polling but the prize will be the glowing admiration of the TFL membership (it's as close as we can get to a group hug) and, AND, (but wait, there's more!) the winners' photos will get put in a "sticky" thread in General Discussion for a suitable time period.

I think it a good idea to post one picture of your entry. So, make it a good one.

What I would like to see is a "start over" ;) ... giving everyone an even start as far as one pic per member entry.

So ... I'm thinking if we close this thread and start anew. What say everyone? Gimme a chorus here ... Aye?

thanks.

I say we keep this thread open until a set of rules/guidelines are established. That way, we don't open another thread and have three pages without structure until post #77. When we do open the new thread, the first post can be by the Administrators stating the rules. Well, let the brainstorming begin.

1. One picture per member, your choice.

2. I suggest the dates of 6/24 to 6/27 or 7/11 to 7/14 for the contest to run. Voting will take place the weekend following the end date with the winner announced on Monday. I'm just throwing these dates out there and we may actually want to go shorter in duration of posting pictures, say from Wednesday to Friday.

3. The thread with the photos can contain photos only. No comments from anyone. If so, they will be deleted. This way, we don't have to trudge through numerous comments to get to the next picture.

4. I think the voting will have to be done like the polls posted here with the members post # being the vote button. I don't know if the Mods can expand the allotted spaces this once for voting or if we will need multiple threads to encompass the entire contest entries. I hope that made sense.

5. Any member can vote but you are only allowed one vote so make it count. I don't know if there is anyway of tracking that or not. I'd like to think we are ladies and gentlemen and can use the honor system but...I just don't trust the Penguin:D!

Okay, now for the nuts and bolts of the final result. The winner will only be able to rub it in our faces for the duration their winning photo is placed in the sticky:D. Maybe they can have the title "Grand Master Photo Champ 2008" next to their name:cool:. And in all fairness, Penguin and Bandit can play. Now we can crown the "Grand Master" once and for all! At least for this year;).

sw_florida
June 3, 2008, 10:38 AM
I'm fine with just one photo per contestant, be it a hand gun or a long gun photo. Any artistic photo should be allowed and each photo should have a title, free of choice, to clarify what the photo is about, be it an artistic title or not.

I'd like to see the posting period to be in July so that people have time to schedule a trip to a specific place or a specific gun range where they would like to shoot the photo, or in my case, I've ordered new barrel that will take one month to arrive from today. How about posting July 1 through July 12 and voting July 13 through July 26? I know I will be away for one week in July but I can't remember which, and I can't be the only one with that dilema. These dates give flexibility. The smartest thing is of course to post the photo as close to the ending posting date as possibe.

Voting could be done in a separate thread, by posting a note to it. That way it's easy to see that each contestant is only voting once.

oneSoneK
June 3, 2008, 12:34 PM
aye.. shut it down and lets organize it from the word go

Shadi Khalil
June 3, 2008, 12:42 PM
Those are all good rules. I like the idea of having till july. If we have that much time to prepare then the posting dates should be shorter, as stated above. Also, the no comment rule is good. As for the voting, I guess we should do whatever is easier, the poll seems to be the best route. Mod's, on the voting, how do you think we should handle it?

kristop64089
June 3, 2008, 08:59 PM
Aye for closing

Bud Helms
June 3, 2008, 09:32 PM
Okay, we're closing this one. I'll post an opening thread for the first weekly contest, with a few basic rules, probably in the next 24 hours. If anyone has any more ideas, just PM me or JohnKSa.

Staff has agreed in principle, but the voting has to be worked out, as a couple of you have mentioned.

sw_florida, in all fairness to everyone here, if you have some special setting or circumstances for your puc, you can just post it in the first weekly contest after you have gotten your picture ready.

Mal H
June 3, 2008, 09:36 PM
Mod's, on the voting, how do you think we should handle it?I think the poll idea is best. That will guarantee only one vote per member, and there will be no missed votes caused by having to sort through and count numerous posts.

We can have as many poll entries as there are photo entries, there is no real limit, at least not for mods. I'll volunteer to set up the voting poll.
