What is the best AR out there for a semi long range tactical use in 223. under $1500. I am looking for somthing out of the ordinary . I have a carbon 15 bushmaster and it will hit a paper plate at 175 yards with a red dot but it has restrictions on what can be upgraded since it is made a little different from a regular ar. I just want more versatility and the security of a metal receiver.

My AR is a Bushmaster M4A3 clone and it ran about $1000 new, I have had no problems and am very satisfied with it.
There are many more excellent ARs out there at reasonable similiar prices, too many to mention and only maybe a couple of absolute junkers, I will leave it to other posters to inform you of their favorites and perhaps the latter
Happy shooting !!

I'd recommend these:
Bushmaster
Rock River Arms
Stag
and of Course Colt
The latter being the most expensive, but I bet you could get a nice Colt for under $1500...

I propose a different approach. Buy a different optic for the Carbon 15, something with cross-hairs. Instead of just hitting paper plates, hit a bullseye. I suspect the Carbon 15 is capable of better groups than "hit a paper plate at 175 yards".
Then buy the new rifle and put the new scope on it. :D
Out of the ordinary? Try JP Rifles JP-15 (http://www.jprifles.com/1.2.2.php) and add accessories as desired.

Ammo like black hills may be an option if you seek better groups .

I have an Ameetec wm-15(ar-15m4) They sell them for $1000 on their page. Mine is dead nuts 1.5 group w/factory ammo at 200yds. My understanding is these are made from scratch guns (afaik). Truly sweet gun tho. definately not run of the mill.

The Smith&Wesson M&P15T it's a real great buy at around $1300. You get Troy front and rear fold down sights and a Troy Mil.1913 Pit. four sided rail system. It's a tight quality built AR and mine shoots really tight groups from the 16" 1/9 chrome lined bbl. Just take a look at mine.

Kind of depends on what your looking for. Do you want a RECON or SPR type custom build or a more traditional chrome lined weapon?
If accuracy and longer range shooting is what your after, then you need to be looking at a custom build with a quality SS barrel.

I like the Knights Armament sr15 ...expensive and hard to get your hands on.

+1 Ameetec. have one and was surprised by the quality finish, really nice. It's real shooter, too. With my 60+ year old eyes, I'll never know if it's 2" @ 200yd. tack driver like the one above, but I've won some range bets with it at 100 yds.:D
EDIT: It shoots as well as my Stag.

I don't know about "best", but I sure like my RRA 24" Var. They have a liufe time warr. & 3/4" accuracy guar, pretty good for a "factory" 223 & for about a grand. Mine will shoot 1/2 MOA 5 shot groups on out to 300. Heck of a gun.
