I was at the gunshop the other day looking for a new ranch rifle for my jeep. They had a French MAS rifle in .308, selling for $200. I need a rifle that can take a beating, affordable, and is decently accurate. Is this MAS any good? Anyone out there with any experience with one of these? Any input would be appreciated!

I believe remember seeing a review of that rifle in the last issue of "The Backwoodsman." (so-so magazine, but interesting sometimes..) The writer seemed to find it a wonderful, under-rated rifle, as I recall. Might be worth seeing if there's a copy in your local bookstore to double-check.

For what it's worth, -- there's a MAS in SGN selling for around $80, dealer price. Not .308 though -- 7.5(?)mm, I believe.

Be wary of the .308 conversions. They have trouble extracting and the .308 mags cost a heckuva lot more than the 7.5 mm French.
