I think this fits here at Legal.
Scenario: (1) I hear of a gun I'm interested in; (2) it's in another state; (3) seller prefers private sale; (4) I drive to other state, range-test, etc. & buy gun, drive home.

Do I have a problem?

Depends on what two states you are talking about. You had better be sure before you do it too.

I seem to remember that it was OK for an Ohio resident to go to an adjoining state to purchase a firearm, but I don't know if that is still the case. For my own purposes, I know that if I were to sell a firearm in a private sale within Ohio, that I would ask for proof of residency and age.

This is certainly not to be considered legal advise. Be sure to check ALL local, state and federal laws before proceeding.

Federal law as I read it states that it is illegal for someone who is prohibited by the laws of his state from owning a gun to buy a gun in another state. Otherwise, you're ok on the federal level. On the state level? As Bluesman said, you better check carefully.

Sounds like that notorious Gun Show Loophole to me!

You have to be there when it's all over. Otherwise you can't say "I told you so."
